Major Recruitment are currently looking for Steel Operative / Overhead Crane Operators in the Oldbury area



Rotating weekly shift patterns:


£12.58ph - 6am till 2pm and 2pm till 10pm shifts


£13.58ph - 10pm till 6am shift


Please note you must work ALL 3 shifts on rotation, you cannot choose one shift only



Overtime:


First 2 hours overtime on weekdays = £15.48ph


Anything from 2 hours to 4 hours overtime on weekdays = £17.37ph


First 4 hours on a saturday £17.37ph


Anything over 4 hours on a Saturday £23.16ph


The role involves slinging large bundles of tube directly off the mill and operating an overhead crane to manoeuvre the bundles into storage.


This including loading and offloading bundles off lorries, also with the crane.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Floop Operator



  • This is the Start of the manufacturing process.

  • Using an overhead crane to load steel coils onto a mandrel and feed it into the rolling mill - Crane certification required in house course will be undertaken

  • When the coil comes to an end, load another onto the mandrel and spot weld them together, this process continues throughout

  • Recording of coils that are loaded and consumed throughout the shop floor computer system

  • All training on overhead cranes will be provided for this part of the role to obtain an in-house license


Mair Packer



  • Operate Uncoiler, Flattener, Shear Welder, and Accumulator

  • Load steel coil into uncoiler, sheer/weld new coil to previous one, and keep line moving

  • Alert to quality issues

  • Use of a Micrometre and Vernier to check the size, thickness and quality of the product

  • Check the length corresponds with the job card and record and book finished products on the shop floor computer system

  • Banding machine to then band the tube at the end of the process

  • Read and correctly use a measuring tape, micrometer, and caliper


Skills and Experience required:



  • Overhead crane experience essential

  • Steel industry experience

  • 1-2 year's industrial manufacturing experience



  • Mechanically inclined

  • Effective communication - reading, speaking, writing, in English

  • Physically able to stand and walk for long periods of time, perform repetitive lifting 30lbs-50lbs, overhead reaching, bending, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling
