Job summary

CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) UK is seeking an Overhaul Technician to disassemble, inspect, repair and assemble bogies and wheelsets in a busy workshop environment in Greater Manchester. You will perform electrical/pneumatic work, support inspections and help maintain quality and safety standards for rail components.

The role requires hands-on experience in heavy engineering, precise measurements and working to production targets while continuously improving processes and lean

Qualifications

• Proven experience in heavy engineering, rail, automotive, aerospace or similar precision mechanical environment.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and inspections.
• Experience with torque-controlled assembly and dimensional checks.

Responsibilities

• Disassemble, clean, inspect, repair and assemble bogies, wheelsets and sub-components per CAF Rail UK procedures.
• Carry out basic electrical and pneumatic disconnections and testing.
• Support non-destructive inspections and maintain traceability and documentation.
• Promote safety and 5S culture within the workshop and meet production targets.

What will be your role in the company?

The Overhaul Technician is responsible for the disassembly, cleaning, inspection, repair, and assembly of bogies, wheelsets, and their associated sub-components in accordance with CAF Rail UK overhaul procedures, engineering specifications, and HSQE standards. This role includes carrying out basic electrical and pneumatic disconnection, functional testing, and supporting non-destructive inspections to ensure the integrity, safety, and quality of all overhauled components. Working as part of the production team, the Overhaul Technician contributes to achieving delivery, quality, and reliability targets through consistent workmanship, adherence to work instructions, and promotion of a strong safety and 5S culture within the workshop.

What salary will you be paid for this role?

As a Real Living Wage Employer, we are proud to pay competitively at CAF. For this role you will be offered a salary in the region of £42,000 per annum.

What will make you successful in this position?

• NVQ Level 3 or above in a relevant mechanical/electrical discipline.
• Proven experience working in a heavy engineering, rail, automotive, aerospace, or similar precision mechanical environment.
• Hands-on experience with mechanical overhaul, assembly, and testing of large components such as bogies, wheelsets, or rotating equipment.
• Competent in the use of lifting and handling equipment, including overhead cranes, manipulators, and hydraulic presses.
• Experience interpreting engineering drawings, technical instructions, and inspection standards.
• Familiar with torque-controlled assembly, precision measurements, and dimensional checks using standard gauges and measuring tools.
• Exposure to basic electrical and pneumatic systems, including disconnection, connection, and pressure testing.
• Understanding of workplace safety practices, COSHH, and risk assessment in an industrial environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work to production targets while maintaining quality, safety, and housekeeping standards.
• Strong focus on safety, quality, and attention to detail in all tasks.
• Reliable, disciplined, and committed to delivering work to the highest standards.
• Proactive and adaptable, able to work effectively within changing priorities or production.
• Positive attitude towards teamwork, communication, and supporting colleagues.

Interview details

We will be runnng two assessment days on Tuesday 20th October 2026 and Thursday 22nd October 2026, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend either the morning or afternoon session on one of these days. Each session will last for approximately 3 hours and will consist of an interview, a practical trades test and a tour of the Overhaul Facility.
