Job description

Outreach Therapeutic Education Practitioner needed in East London

Do you have a background in SEMH, SEBD or challenging behaviour? Are you looking for an exciting outreach opportunity?

This specialist school based in East London is seeking an Outreach Therapeutic Education Practitioner with experience working with challenging children and young people. The school caters to pupils with conditions such as depression, ASD, ADHD, complex needs, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and attachment disorders.

Therapeutic Education Practitioners (TEPs) are responsible for delivering direct educational work with individual pupils within the school and community settings.

TEPs develop and monitor Individual Education, Behaviour, and Integration Plans, working alongside class teachers. They employ a holistic approach, utilizing social care and teaching strategies to meet pupil needs. All staff follow Local Authority and Newham PRUs’ Child Protection Procedures, prioritizing pupil welfare.

The outreach role involves working with secondary pupils with severe complex needs, including attachment disorders. Pupils range from those with mild learning difficulties to gifted and talented students.

Opportunities are available for TEPs to succeed through highly personalized individual education plans designed to support each student.

The Therapeutic Education Department collaborates closely with nurses, doctors, therapists, and community professionals.

Overall Purpose of Job

  1. Support pupils through pastoral care, working one-to-one and in groups, both in and outside the classroom, involving parents, carers, and external agencies.
  2. Deliver high-quality, structured therapeutic learning support to improve attendance, engagement, academic progress, and emotional well-being, including before/after school activities, targeted interventions, and family liaison.
  3. Create and monitor Individual Education, Behaviour, and Integration Plans, and intervention programs from admission to reintegration or progression, following the assess, plan, do, review cycle.
  4. Provide teacher cover during short-term absences.
  5. Support scheme of work delivery, including differentiation and resource preparation.
  6. Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement targeted interventions across Newham PRUs.
  7. Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to address pupils' individual needs and help overcome barriers to learning, both within and outside school.
  8. Contribute to transition planning for pupils, considering pathways such as reintegration to mainstream education or progression to post-16 education or training.
  9. Support parental engagement initiatives to involve parents and carers actively in school life and provide access to additional support and information.
  10. Assist in the daily operational running of the school, including conducting searches and duty sessions.

The school offers:

  • A committed and enthusiastic staff team.
  • Quality professional development opportunities.
  • An exciting opportunity to influence the school's future and foster a culture of achievement and progress for all pupils.
  • A purposeful, happy, and supportive environment focused on learning.
