Job Description:

Within the role of outreach worker, the successful applicant would be expected to engage with individuals affected by substance misuse in community settings, with the goal of reducing harm and facilitating access to treatment and support. The role involves building trusting relationships with service members who may be disengaged from services, including but not limited to rough sleepers, those in temporary accommodation, or individuals involved with the criminal justice system.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assertive outreach in various settings (e.g., streets, houses of multiple occupancy, warm welcoming spaces) to identify and engage individuals who use drugs and/or alcohol.
  • Providing brief interventions, harm reduction advice, and communicating with harm reduction team for concerns regarding paraphernalia or naloxone need.
  • Supporting individuals to access treatment with South Tyneside Adult Recovery Service, aiming to increase referrals.
  • Liaising with partner agencies such as housing providers, healthcare services, social care, and probation for holistic support.
  • Advocating for individuals to ensure they receive necessary services while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Maintaining accurate records and contributing to monitoring and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Safeguarding individuals accessing support.
  • Having knowledge of the organisation's teams and linking with team members regarding service users.
  • Working hours are Monday to Friday, 9-5, with occasional late nights if necessary.

This role requires strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, resilience, and understanding of issues surrounding substance misuse, mental health, trauma, homelessness, and social exclusion. Applicants with a driving license and access to a car are preferred.
