Times have never been so busy! On average our Outpatients department in our unit based at the Royal South Hants hospital, Southampton are seeing and treating 1,500 patients per month and this number is set to grow even further!

Due to the ever-increasing number of treatments and care we are offering, our very active outpatients department has additional requirements forHealthcare Assistantsto join and be part of our focused, friendly, professional and supportive Outpatients team.

TheHealthcare Assistantswill be hands-on, supporting Doctors, registered Nurses and other professional staff with the overall responsibility for all patients within the outpatient department.

These are permanent positions, working a 4-day week

shift patterns will be from Monday to Saturday

3 days from 08:00 to 18:00

1 day from 08:00 to 17:30

Main duties of the job

As our Healthcare Assistants you'll be ensuring that our patients receive a high standard of care by carrying out routine patient monitoring and care duties that will be relevant to each patient.

You'll be expected to have gained up to date knowledge of your patient, by investigating the patent pathway. Youll need to competently and accurately update patient records, ensuring the patient pathway is being followed and documented. This will be performed via our internal patient system.

You'll make sure your patients are prepared and ready for any treatments or surgery booked and ensure all necessary checks are conducted prior to a treatment or surgery taking place.

The appointed Healthcare Assistants will perform phlebotomy when required and work closely with the Lab Technicians, by providing required cross-referencing detail and background information relating to the patient and the blood sample taken.

There will be elements of administration tasks to be carried out, you may be called upon to collect all patient information together for admissions and discharging or for follow-up calls. You may be required to photocopy particulars and transport patient paperwork to other departments.

You will be conscious of health, safety and hygiene aspects in a department. Not only will you look to make sure the department is clean, you will monitor and look for potential hazards, ensuring they are made safe or the issue is quickly bright to the attention or the Department Manager.

About us

It is envisaged that the appointed Healthcare Assistant will have past working experience a hospital / clinical environment and might have already completed the NVQ level 1&2 in Health and Social Care or equivalent.

Youll have experience as a phlebotomist in the past, havingtaken blood samples from patients and worked closely with the laboratory to assess the samples taken. You will be familiar with conducting ECGs scans and working closely, directly with Doctors to support patient within your care.

Youll be computer literate, familiar with accurately updating records and databases with the ability to pick up new systems easily.

Youll be an effective communicator at all levels, both written and verbal you will be liaising with different departments internal and external, face to face, via email or over the phone, as well as family, friends or carers of your patients.
