Skills and Qualifications

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver structured outdoor education sessions tailored to the needs of pupils with SEMH difficulties.
  • Use a trauma-informed approach to build trusting relationships and promote emotional resilience.
  • Lead activities including bushcraft, orienteering, environmental education, team-building, outdoor crafts, and nature-based play.
  • Work closely with teaching staff and SEN specialists to adapt sessions to individual education and behaviour plans (IEPs/IBPs).
  • Ensure risk assessments are up-to-date and health and safety protocols are followed at all times.
  • Monitor and evaluate pupil progress in social, emotional, and behavioural development during sessions.
  • Support the reintegration of students into classroom settings through improved self-regulation and engagement skills.
  • Maintain outdoor learning spaces and manage tools and equipment responsibly.
  • Model and reinforce positive behaviour, communication, and conflict resolution.
Person Specification
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or behavioural difficulties.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection in educational settings.
  • Proven ability to manage challenging behaviour with empathy and confidence.
  • Experience delivering outdoor or experiential education activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Resilience, patience, and a sense of humour.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Relevant qualification in outdoor education, forest school, youth work, or teaching (e.g., Level 3 Forest School Leader, outdoor first aid).
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and de-escalation strategies.
  • Experience within a PRU, alternative provision, or special school setting.
