Job summary

The University of Worcester's Sport and Recreation service invites enthusiastic individuals to join as Outdoor Activity, Sport and Exercise Instructors at Lakeside Campus. You will help deliver land, water and aerial activities to diverse client groups while supporting practical teaching sessions and community bookings.

No prior outdoor qualifications are required as comprehensive training is provided, including 270 hours across 15 activities.

Outdoor Activity, Sport and Exercise Instructors

The University of Worcester's Sport and Recreation service continues to grow, providing outstanding opportunities for students, academic programmes, external organisations and community groups.

Based at the University of Worcester Lakeside Campus, this role supports the delivery of outdoor adventurous activities, practical teaching sessions and community bookings across our land, water and aerial activity programmes.

You will help deliver high-quality experiences for students and external clients while ensuring compliance with statutory health and safety requirements, Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) regulations, National Governing Body requirements, and internal quality standards including the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge, Adventuremark and wider educational quality expectations associated with Ofsted.

Main Responsibilities

• Deliver land, water and aerial activities to a variety of client groups.
• Support academic practical sessions, community bookings and commercial programmes.
• Set up, inspect, maintain and store activity equipment.
• Assist with equipment inspection and decommissioning processes.
• Maintain high standards of health, safety, customer service and site presentation.
• Support the wider operation of Lakeside Campus and, where required, other University of Worcester Sport and Recreation facilities.

Training and Development

No previous outdoor qualifications are required, as full training will be provided for suitable candidates.

Successful applicants can expect to receive approximately 270 hours of paid training and assessment opportunities across all 15 land, water and aerial activities delivered at Lakeside.

The majority of training is delivered in-house by our experienced technical team and focuses on the skills and competencies required to safely instruct across Lakeside's activity portfolio. In addition, instructors may have the opportunity to gain externally recognised National Governing Body qualifications such as Paddlesport Instructor and Open Water Lifeguard. These opportunities are subject to operational requirements, individual progress and funding availability and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

This unique programme provides valuable industry experience and a broad range of technical, instructional and leadership skills that will enhance future employment opportunities.

• This is a casual, hourly-paid position and there is no guarantee of work.
• Successful applicants are expected to engage fully with the training and assessment programme.
• Opportunities for full-time and part-time fixed-term contracts may become available during the peak season (May to September).

Essential Considerations

This role involves:

• Working at height.
• Working on and in water.
• Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Manual handling of activity equipment.
• Weekend, evening and occasional residential work.
