Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Cheltenham is seeking an experienced Orthoptist for a fixed-term maternity cover to lead audit and governance within the department. The role spans two acute units with opportunities in ocular motility, neuro-visual fields, and intravitreal injections in Medical Retina.

The successful candidate will join a team of 11 Orthoptists, work across county clinics, and contribute to a busy Ophthalmology service renowned for training and research.

Qualifications

• HCPC registration is required.
• Extensive post-graduate experience.
• Clinical Tutors qualification desirable.
• Orthoptics degree (BSc or BMedSci) required.
• Experience with EPR/Medisight and Excel.
• Good presentation skills; comfortable with PowerPoint for teaching.
• High level of literacy.
• Able to adapt and work flexibly to meet service needs.
• Able to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and staff.

Responsabilités

• Lead in a sub-specialist area of Orthoptic service under Professional Lead for Orthoptics.
• Provide input across county-wide orthoptic services.
• Use initiative when Professional Lead is unavailable; deputise at meetings.
• Carry out intravitreal injections in a Consultant-led clinic.
• Support junior team members and provide clinical advice.
• Support Optometry Technicians with testing and guidance.
• Prioritise GP referrals and other health-professional referrals for Orthoptic opinion.
• Manage appointment-related queries and liaise with senior Orthoptists.
• Ensure clinical area safety and report hazards.
• Be familiar with the Trusts PAS and check clinic bookings.
• Work within a multi-disciplinary team and plan own workload.
• Participate in regular Orthoptic departmental meetings and feedback.
• Lead departmental audit and research; cover for colleagues when needed.
• Report damage or issues timely to the manager.
