Job summary

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an Orthopaedic Practitioner (Plaster Technician) to join the Fracture Clinic team. The role involves casting, splinting and maintaining a plaster room across inpatients, outpatients and theatre settings.

You will assess and apply casts, remove and maintain plaster devices, and provide patient-focused aftercare guidance to children and their families, while supporting the multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

• BOA/RCN AOT Diploma in Casting Techniques or BCC or equivalent
• GCSE A-C/4-9 including English and Maths
• Evidence of CPD in trauma, paediatrics or orthopaedic practice
• Paediatric-specific training or qualifications

Responsibilities

• Co-ordinate the day-to-day running of the Plaster Room in the Fracture Clinic with the Plaster Technician Team.
• Provide evidence-based aftercare advice to children, young people and families.
• Maintain stock levels and a clean, safe working environment following Trust policies.
• Deliver planned care as directed by a registered practitioner and report care to supervising staff.
• Support MDT in fracture clinic and theatre settings to ensure high-quality care.

Orthopaedic Practitioner (Plaster Technician)

We are looking for a motivated, skilled and compassionate orthopaedic plaster technician to join our dynamic orthopaedic team. This is an exciting opportunity for a band 5 practitioner to provide high quality plaster and casting service to patients across inpatients, outpatient and theatre settings.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the assessment, application, removal and maintenance of a ide range of casts, splints and orthopaedic devises, ensuring safe evidence based care and whilst promoting patient comfort and recovery.

You will work closely with Orthopaedic consultants, junior doctors, nurses and the multi disciplinary team to deliver an efficient and patient centred service.

Main duties of the job

Work with the Plaster Technician Team to co-ordinate the day to day running of the Plaster Room within the Fracture Clinic.Provide appropriate evidence based advice, and instructions to children, young people and their families regarding the aftercare of their casting,To work with the Plaster Technician Team to ensure stock levels are maintained within the department.To work with the Plaster Technician Team to maintain a clean and safe working environment in accordance with Trust policies.Implement, organise and deliver planned care once agreed by a registered practitioner for designated patients. All aspects of care will be reported to the appropriate supervising registered practitioner.

To work as a member of the Multidisciplinary Orthopaedic & theatre teams providing high quality and safe treatment to Patients and Families attending Fracture Clinic and elective orthopaedic, PMBTs & spinal theatres.

Undertake tasks and procedures in which competence has been taught, demonstrated and recorded, specific to the environment in which the post holder is employed.Once competent, perform accurate documentation of care given, according to the Trust's PoliciesMaintain mandatory training requirements of the role via moodle & face to face training.

QUALIFICATIONS

• British Orthopaedic Association/RCN (SON) AOT Diploma in Casting Techniques / British Casting Certificate (BCC) or equivalent recognised qualification
• GCSE grade A-C / 4-9 (or equivalent) including English and Maths
• Evidence of relevant continuing professional development (CPD) in trauma, paediatrics or orthopaedic practice
• Paediatric-specific training or qualifications

KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

• A range of experience and knowledge in the field of casting and orthotics
• Knowledge of fracture management and casting techniques
• Knowledge of infection prevention and control, safeguarding, and consent
• Experience of mentoring, training or supervising junior staff or students

ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

• Assess patients independently and make sound clinical judgements regarding appropriate casting interventions autonomously
• Ability to make adjustments based on clinical presentation and patient feedback
• Recognise and respond appropriately to cast-related complications and deteriorating patient presentations, including early identification of limb- or life-threatening symptoms, with timely escalation
• Ability to evaluate clinical information and advise the wider team on appropriate materials and techniques
• Assess the individual needs of paediatric patients, adapting approach and technique accordingly across a wide age range
• Ability to evaluate clinical information and advise the wider orthopaedic team / MDT on appropriate materials and techniques

PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

• Knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, physiology and common orthopaedic and trauma conditions, including paediatric presentations
• Working knowledge of and adherence to the Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners AOP UK and British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Code of Professional Practice
• Understanding of infection control principles and tissue viability
• Knowledge of relevant NHS policies, legislation and governance frameworks, including safeguarding, consent and patient confidentiality
• Up to date awareness of current clinical and professional issues relevant to orthopaedic practice
• Knowledge of relevant casting materials, appliances, aids and their appropriate clinical application
• Knowledge of NHS paediatric safeguarding procedures and the ability to recognise and elevate concerns
• Awareness of virtual fracture clinic processes and digital patient management systems

PERSONAL SKILLS / ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

• Working to manual handling, infection control and health and safety guidelines when performing casting and splinting procedures
