St Helier Hospital is a designated Trauma Unit within the SW London and Surrey Network. All elective orthopaedic work is undertaken at Epsom General Hospital or EOC.
This post is static within the Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Team at St Helier Hospital. The caseload is trauma, primarily # NOF rehabilitation, with some involvement in the repatriation of major trauma patients from SGH. Our Hip Fracture Unit at St Helier Hospital is nationally recognized as the best performing hip fracture unit in the London area for the last 10 consecutive years and in the top 5% of the UK. ESTH’s Fractured Neck of Femur Pathway has received national acclaim; the physiotherapy team plays a vital role in this pathway. A prioritised 7-day service is offered, ensuring all patients are offered rehabilitation from day 1 post-op.
This post involves regularly contributing to the prioritised 7-day service through rostered weekends.
Main Objectives
- To provide a high standard physiotherapy service to adult inpatients within St. Helier Hospital.
- To abide by the CSP rules of professional conduct and local professional and quality standards.
- To assess and treat own workload of patients, who may have complex presentations, and maintain associated records as an autonomous practitioner.
- To supervise and teach recently qualified physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants, students, and involve in teaching MDT staff.
- To undertake evidence-based projects, including recommendations for change in practice, and participate in departmental research and audit.
- To assist the Band 7 Physiotherapist by monitoring caseloads, recording statistics, and prioritising referrals as required.
- To liaise effectively with other disciplines.
- To work closely with the MDT on a daily basis.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Patient Care
- To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of your work.
- To carry out assessments of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with complex presentations, using clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based practice to determine appropriate care plans, managing deteriorating patients and respiratory conditions.
- To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses across a wide range of conditions, with occasional guidance from specialist physiotherapists.
- To formulate accurate prognoses and recommend the best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans.
- To continually reassess patients to progress treatments effectively.
- To coordinate interventions, including liaising with other disciplines; advising and educating patients, carers, relatives, and other health professionals.
- To maintain accurate written records using the POMR system, including data collection, progress, and discharge reports to medical referrers.
- To manage clinical risk within your caseload at all times.
- To demonstrate physical ability to carry out assessments and interventions, including manual therapy techniques and therapeutic handling.
- To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, coordination, and sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment.
- To manage potentially stressful, upsetting, or emotional situations empathetically as they arise.
