Position Details

Specialist Optometrist - Band 7

This part-time role offers 15 hours per week, with a pro-rata salary. We welcome applications from candidates seeking part-time work.

About the Role

Located in Swindon, GWH NHS Foundation Trust offers a vibrant environment in the busy Ophthalmology department. The hospital is easily accessible via A419 and M4, with excellent links to London, Reading, Bristol, Cheltenham, and Gloucestershire. Surrounded by picturesque countryside near the Marlborough Downs and Cotswolds, we pride ourselves on high-quality patient care and staff support.

The successful candidate will provide core (complex refraction for adults and pediatrics, low vision assessment, medical contact lens management) and extended (glaucoma, AMD, pre/post operative assessment) optometry services. Collaboration with ophthalmology colleagues is essential to enhance patient care. The role involves teaching, research, audit participation, and operational leadership within the department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform refractive assessments and ocular examinations for patients of all ages, including those with significant visual loss or communication difficulties.
  • Assess and dispense low vision aids and contact lenses.
  • Work in extended roles within glaucoma, AMD, and other ophthalmology clinics alongside medical staff.
  • Collaborate closely with optometry, orthoptics, and ophthalmology teams for optimal patient management.
  • Carry out other clinical duties essential to service operation.
  • Explain, instruct, motivate, and manage patients and carers during examinations and treatments.
  • Provide advice and support related to diagnosis and management to patients and relevant parties.
