Job summary

Specialist Optometrist - Band 7

This role is offered on a part-time basis of 15 hours per week. Candidates interested in working part-time are encouraged to apply, and salaries will be pro-rated accordingly.

We have a fantastic opportunity at The Great Western Hospitals (GWH) NHS Foundation Trust for an experienced Optometrist seeking a new challenge within our busy Ophthalmology department. GWH is conveniently located near the A419 and M4, offering quick access to London, Reading, Bristol, Cheltenham, and Gloucestershire. It is situated amidst beautiful countryside at the foot of the Marlborough Downs, just south of the Cotswolds.

Main duties of the job

The role involves providing core services (complex refraction for adults and pediatrics, low vision assessment, medical contact lens management) and extended services (glaucoma, AMD, pre/post operative assessment). You will contribute to the clinical management of patients in collaboration with the ophthalmology team to improve patient care.

The successful candidate will be proactive in teaching, research, and audit programs, as well as providing operational leadership within the department.

Job responsibilities
  1. Undertake refractive assessment and ocular examinations for pediatric and adult patients, including those with significant visual loss and communication difficulties.
  2. Assess for and dispense low vision aids and contact lenses to patients of all ages.
  3. Work in an extended role capacity in glaucoma, AMD, and other ophthalmology clinics alongside medical staff.
  4. Collaborate closely with colleagues in optometry, orthoptics, and ophthalmology for optimal patient management.
  5. Perform other clinical duties essential to the service's operation.
  6. Explain, instruct, motivate, and manage patients and carers during examinations and treatments.
  7. Provide advice and support to patients and related parties affected by diagnosis and management.
