Job Description

The Role

As an Optical Materials Scientist, you will design and develop innovative electro-optic technologies through hands-on materials research and experimentation. Your work will focus on controlling how light and infrared radiation interact with surfaces, leading to new phenomena.

You will support QinetiQ’s mission to enhance safety and security by developing advanced optical materials, improving surveillance systems and sensors to protect people and infrastructure. You will join a multidisciplinary team of Engineers, Physicists, Vision Scientists, and Chemists, providing scientific expertise and managing complex research programs related to materials, measurements, and devices. You will also develop bespoke solutions for new applications across QinetiQ’s Applied Sciences capabilities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading technical tasks related to materials, devices, and measurements
  • Designing, modeling, synthesizing, applying, and characterizing novel materials and coatings for prototyping
  • Conducting laboratory experiments and outdoor trials
  • Providing advice and consultancy for internal and external projects and bids
  • Managing your time and technical progress to meet goals and deadlines
  • Maintaining detailed technical reports and logs

This role is based at our Farnborough site, working 37 hours per week, with hybrid working options available.

Essential experience:

  • Understanding of interactions between materials and electromagnetic radiation
  • Proficiency with spectrometers and laboratory test equipment, including spectrometers, imagers, and thermal analysis tools (e.g., DSC/TGA)
  • Experience in formulating coatings, inks, and dyes
  • Knowledge of scientific programming languages such as Matlab

Essential qualifications:

  • Degree in Chemistry or Materials Science (MSci, MChem, or PhD preferred)
