Job summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an Ophthalmic Imaging Technician to join the Ophthalmic Imaging Team. You will deliver high-quality imaging and visual field assessments for outpatients, inpatients and Eye Emergency patients, working with Ophthalmic Consultants and Optometrists.

Applicants should have practical ophthalmic imaging experience, be able to record patient data accurately, and competently use OCT, fundus photography, visual fields and related equipment.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality visual field and diagnostic imaging service for outpatients, inpatients and Eye Emergency.

• Support accurate diagnosis and ongoing care using imaging data.
• Assist with rotation to satellite clinic at Lymington New Forest Hospital.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Ophthalmic Imaging Team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust as an Ophthalmic Imaging Technician. We are seeking applicants with previous ophthalmic imaging experience who are looking to further develop their skills within a busy and progressive Eye Unit. Experience in performing some ophthalmic imaging investigations such as OCT, fundus photography, visual field testing, and other diagnostic ophthalmic procedures is essential for this role. This position offers the opportunity to work with a wide range of imaging technologies and contribute to the diagnosis and management of diverse ophthalmic conditions. The successful candidate will provide a range of ophthalmic imaging services and visual field assessments for patients attending the Eye Unit, including outpatients, inpatients, and those presenting to Eye Emergency. As an Ophthalmic Imaging Technician, you will provide a high-quality visual field and diagnostic imaging service for outpatients, inpatients and patients attending Eye Emergency. Working closely with Ophthalmic Consultants, Optometrists and other members of the multidisciplinary team, your main responsibilities will include: You will be responsible for delivering specialised ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic procedures to a consistently high and reproducible standard. This includes accurately recording patient information on each imaging platform and ensuring that all images and results are assigned to the correct patient. Working closely with Ophthalmic Consultants, Optometrists and Nursing staff, you will support the accurate diagnosis and ongoing care of patients with a range of ophthalmic conditions.

Previous practical experience of ophthalmic imaging or diagnostic testing is essential. You will need a good understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, ophthalmic conditions, visual fields and related disease processes. You should also be able to undertake visual field and visual acuity assessments confidently, with an appropriate level of independence. Applicants should have experience of, or be able to demonstrate competence in, using ophthalmic equipment such as:

• Humphrey visual field analyser
• Focimeter
• LOGMAR chart
• Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
• Retinal fundus photography equipment
• Other relevant ophthalmic imaging equipment

The role also includes undertaking visual field and visual acuity assessments for diagnosis and treatment, including assessments relating to Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) requirements. You should be confident in producing clear and accurate images of the retina, optic discs and corneas, using your knowledge and practical experience to obtain the best possible representation of each patient's condition.

• While the role is primarily based at University Hospital Southampton, there will also be a requirement to support our satellite clinic at Lymington New Forest Hospital on a rotational basis.
