The NHS is seeking a Medical Retina Fellow for a 12-month post in Leeds, focusing on high-quality retinal care. The fellow will engage in outpatient clinics, research, and contribute to departmental objectives while gaining extensive experience in medical retina ophthalmology.
TheEye Department in Leeds, is looking for a Medical Retina Fellow to work for 12months. The post holder will be working with the five Medical RetinaConsultants working within the department. The medical retina service in Leedsis provided at St Jamess, Seacroft and Wharfedale hospitals where theclinic/virtual clinics are undertaken.
Applicationsare welcomed for this post, which could be held as either full time or parttime. This position would suit a senior higher surgical trainee or post-CCTdoctor who has to demonstrable interest in Medical Retina Ophthalmology. Theappointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of motivation for thesubject of Medical Retina and have some relevant prior clinical experience.
Thepost is available from the beginning of September and will be for 12 months.
Candidatesmust be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license topractice at the time of appointment.
Successfulcandidates will be expected to be involved in:
Out-patient clinics and intravitrealinjections
Supervision of patients
Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings
Referrals to other specialists,departments and hospitals are timely and appropriate
To link with Consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams within the Trust
To contribute to research, teachingand new developments within the Ophthalmology department. The post holder willbe encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical researchprograms on going in the department.
In addition to the clinical skills,the post holder will be actively involved in research and publication.
The post holder will also be expectedto develop a deeper understanding of management issues within Teaching HospitalDepartments and the wider Trust.
The post holder will assist inproviding service alongside the consultant team, this will include clinics,intravitreal injections, Acute Referral Clinic
TheEye Department is based at St James University Hospital, Leeds withOphthalmology Services also held at Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital.There are 29 consultants in the wider Ophthalmology Department. The team alsotrains Ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region. We have recently movedinto a new outpatient department which has provided us which much more spacefor patients and clinicians.

DUTIESOF THE POST
Todeliver a wide range of Ophthalmology care and sub-speciality medical retinacare for adult patients at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Ensure provision of a high standardof care to patients
Accept and manage referrals fromother specialists, departments and hospitals in a timely and appropriatemanner
Make referrals to otherspecialists, departments and hospitals in a timely and appropriate manner
Contribute to departmental meetings
Contribute to quality improvement,research, teaching and new developments within the Ophthalmologydepartment.
Thepost holder will spend up to 12 months working in the OphthalmologyDepartment in SJUH. Although the focuswill be within the medical retina service, the post holder will also beexpected to cover the Acute Referral Service seeing general Ophthalmologyemergencies and patients. The option of a session for cataract surgery can bediscussed.
Theobjectives for the year would be to further train the post holder in MedicalRetina ophthalmology.
Bythe end of the 12 months, the post holder would be expected to be confidentin the assessment, diagnosis and management of Medical Retina patients. Therewill also be opportunities to be involved in the departments clinicalresearch portfolio. Opportunities for training, education and acquiring /enhancing relevant knowledge and skills will be offered in the followingareas:
- Referral triage and prioritisation
- Initial assessment, investigationand diagnosis of patients with retinal disease
- Initial and ongoing treatment ofretinal vascular disease
- Thermal and PDT laser
- Structural OCT, OCT angiography,autofluorescence imaging, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography
- Assessment of patients withinherited retinal disease and diagnostic genetic testing
- Face to face and virtual clinics
- Liaison with diabetic retinopathyscreening
- Phase 1-3 clinic trials
Thepost holder will also be expected to develop a deeper understanding ofmanagement issues within Teaching Hospital Departments and the wider Trust.
