Overview

Delaware Eye Care Center is searching for a Lead Ophthalmic Technician for Our Team at our Governor's Ave. office in Dover, DE. No late evenings, no major holidays or Sundays, a robust benefits package, a team oriented working environment where you are seen, heard and respected.

Our Top Candidate will bring at least five years of Ophthalmic Technician experience as well as one plus years of supervisory experience in an eye practice.

The Role: The Ophthalmic Technician will perform a range of duties which include preparing the patient to see Ophthalmologist and/or Optometrist and conduct preliminary exam and captures medical history. In addition, the preparation of examination and treatment rooms, performing basic and routine vision screening examinations, administering eye medications, cleaning, and maintaining ophthalmic instruments and assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures may be required. Travel to other locations may also be necessary to support clinical needs. The Ophthalmic Technician may also be required to support training efforts of other clinical staff as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Make introductions and establish rapport with patients.
  • Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.
  • Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assess extra ocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assess angles, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the physician including specialty tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, and dry eye testing.
  • Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), and optical biometry.
  • Additional testing as requested by doctor.
  • Perform retinoscopy and refractometry. Assist with minor surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office.
  • Assist with fitting contact lenses and instruct patients in care and insertion of lenses.
  • Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician, with full documentation in patient chart.
  • Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician.
  • Check temperature of medical refrigerator daily.
  • Maintain and conduct inventory of medications and supplies.
  • Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment.
  • Clean surgical instruments in preparation for sterile processing.
  • Inspect instruments periodically for damage, send for repair, and request a replacement, as necessary.
  • Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down in an appropriate manner and as per office procedures, battery powered instruments are seated properly in re-charge wells, slit lamps and projectors are switched off under covers.
  • Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines.
  • Prioritize building and maintaining a positive relationship with doctors and clinical colleagues.
  • Executes duties of position in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficient with medical and ophthalmic terminology.
  • Strong organization with attention to detail.
  • Ability to accurately check visual acuity, applanation, history taking, pupil assessment, EOM’s, and confrontation field of vision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, staff, managers, and doctors.
  • Basic computer literacy required.
  • Highly energetic with a positive attitude.
  • Must be willing to travel to other offices occasionally to meet the demands of business.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for eight hours.
  • Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly lit setting.
  • Five years as Ophthalmic Technician required.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) required.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Scribe (OSC) preferred.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) required.
  • Two-three years in multi-specialty clinic preferred.
  • Must be proficient with the following skills:
  • History taking.
  • Visual Acuities.
  • IOP (via applanation tonometry and tonopen).
  • Auto Refraction.
  • Manual Refraction (plus and minus cyl).
  • Lensometry.
  • Topography.
  • Biometry (Lenstar, IOL Master, and Immersion A-scan).
  • Knowledge of Ophthalmic Surgical Procedures (Cataract Surgery, LASIK, CXL, SLT, Yag Capsulotomy, iStent, Trabeculectomy, etc.).
  • Knowledge of ophthalmology billing/coding preferred.
  • NextGen experience preferred.
