Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Ophthalmic Specialist Nurse Practitioner to join our dedicated team within the ophthalmic department.

We are seeking a 1st Level Registered Nurse with at least 5 years of post-registration ophthalmology experience, competent in Intra Vitreal Injection, with advanced ophthalmology clinical skills and up-to-date knowledge.

The post requires flexibility to work between 0800hrs and 2000hrs, Monday to Friday, with potential changes aligned with the ophthalmic service.

The primary responsibility will be the Nurse Led Injection Service, alongside involvement in various clinics such as Post-Operative Cataract, Botox for blepharospasm, AMD clinics, and general clinics. The role includes coordinating triage services and supporting the Clinic Manager in departmental supervision.

The post holder will have professional, clinical, and educational responsibilities across ophthalmic clinics and the AMD Nurse Led injection service, with accountability for clinical and staff governance, patient needs assessment, care pathway development, and acting as a role model to ensure high standards of care.

The role is within Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, serving a population of over 600,000 with a workforce of more than 10,500 staff across 21 sites. The Trust is committed to providing Five Star Patient Care.

Key Duties:
  1. Practice within the NMC Code of Practice, attend mandatory training, and maintain professional appearance and confidence.
  2. Develop patient care pathways incorporating new technology.
  3. Ensure adherence to standards of care, privacy, dignity, and effective communication.
  4. Develop evidence-based policies and ensure high standards of patient record-keeping.
  5. Provide clinical advice, maintain registration, and support quality targets through audits.
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Complete patient treatment documentation.
  • Dictate clinic letters.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities:
  • Create a conducive learning environment and maintain academic links.
  • Conduct annual appraisals, support staff development, and act as a mentor.
Line Management Responsibilities:
  • Manage daily operations, resource allocation, supervise staff, and ensure a cohesive MDT approach.
  • Handle complaints, monitor objectives, and support cost improvement initiatives.
Financial Responsibilities:
  • Participate in CIP programmes, ensure stock control, and support lean principles.
Research & Audit:
  • Support clinical governance, participate in research and audit, and promote innovative practice.
