Job summary

The Boortmalt Group in Buckie is seeking a Day Operator to oversee barley intake through to malt dispatch, ensuring safe, reliable production and strict adherence to customer specifications on a 12-hour shift.

You will operate weighbridge, barley drying and malt handling, monitor PLC-controlled processes, complete batch records and laboratory checks, and uphold hygiene, safety and environmental standards across the site.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of the full malting process from barley intake to despatch
  • Ability to attain MAGB Fundamentals in Malting within 3 years of starting
  • Experience with barley quality analysis and malt quality checks
  • Proficiency with batch records and plant documentation

Operator## Main tasks**As a Day Operator,** you will play a key role in producing high-quality malt that consistently meets and exceeds customer specifications, from barley intake through to malt dispatch, while supporting efficient and cost-effective operations.You will take ownership of the day-to-day operation and process control of the malting plant, with a strong focus on barley, malt, and co-product handling. Working closely with line management and colleagues across the site, you will coordinate activities, follow operational priorities, and provide support across teams whenever required.Safety is at the heart of everything you do. You will actively contribute to a zero-harm culture, helping to protect the health and safety of everyone on site while minimizing environmental impact.In this role, you will support and control the general operation of barley intake, drying, malt production, and the dispatch of malt and co-products, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient site performance every day. **Key responsibilities:** 1. **Barley & Malt Handling**· Weighbridge operation.· Barley intake barley drying and screening.· Barley dressing.· Malt handling· Operation of pellet plant.· Preparation of samples.· Checks before dispatch (Lab checks).· Malt/Pellets/Screenings out loading.· Alerting management of any deviations in grain handling.· Any other reasonable duties as requested by management. · Reporting of breakdowns/faults and initial inspections.· Complete detailed end of shift handover & communicate to oncoming Shift Operator 2. **Production Process (as necessary to meet business requirements)** Deputise for Shift Operator in Control of the malting production process from barley to malt as follows:* Barley to steep as per process instruction and control via PLC.* Steeping as per process instruction and control via PLC.* Germination per process instruction and control via PLC.* Kilning as per process instruction and control via PLC.· Conduct & record confirmation of checks on process batch cards* Monitoring of process control and reaction to and progress of any adverse conditions associated with the malt process.* Alerting management of any deviations in process control. 3. **Hygiene/Cleaning*** Completion & confirmation of completion (or justification of non-completion) of jobs as detailed on cleaning sheets.* Working on own initiative, prioritise accordingly any other hygiene requirements which is not specifically scheduled on the issued cleaning sheet. 4. **Documentation and Records** All the following documents to be completed (non-exhaustive list): * Barley dressing sheet, screenings analysis, barley drying sheet.* All sections of the batch record sheets.* Cleaning sheet.* Magnet record sheets.* Checks before dispatch.* Shift Change Sheets* Shift Check Sheets* Fault Log / Maximo (as required)* Lab analysis sheets. 5. **Statutory/Legal Obligations*** Ensure compliance with all current legal & statutory obligations including, but not limited to, Health & Safety, HACCP/food safety, environmental and employment legislation.## Master we are looking for ?**Qualifications & skills:** **Day Operator*** Barley handling from intake to pre-steep and malt movements from off-kiln through to malt out-loading.* Understanding of the full malting process (barley intake, drying & storage through to malt despatch) to allow the role holder to operate the site during a single person 12hr shift where necessary.* The ability to attain MAGB Fundamentals in Malting qualification within 3 years of starting employment.* Conduct barley quality analysis on incoming loads and malt quality checks pre-despatch.* Operation of weighbridge system & loading of lorries with malt & co-products as required.* Understanding the electrical and mechanical operation of the site & ability to undertake basic fault finding & report process deviations or machinery faults which cannot be corrected.* Provide direct assistance to shift engineer and other engineers.* Understanding the importance of health & safety, food & feed safety, site hygiene, environmental issues and accurate record keeping.* Basic to intermediate level IT skills.* Ability to follow barley and malt preparation and production process batch instructions and a common sense thinking and approach to allow working on own initiative to a level of authority.* Practical hands-on attitude with good situational awareness and the ability to complete documented risk assessments where necessary and work safely at all times.* Able to actively participate in daily operations meetings.* Able to successfully complete training inc misc safety related courses, telehandler and shovel loader driver training, and any other training required to carry out normal operator duties.Actively participate in continual improvement initiatives.## Masters of Malt's treasure**Advantages:**We offer an attractive salary and benefits package and as part of a global organization can offer career opportunities internationally.
