Brief Description
About our route
We are the Central route, the heart of Britain’s Railway. More than a million people rely on us weekly, and we transport nearly a million tonnes of freight monthly. We are more than tracks and trains; we are a catalyst for jobs, opportunities, leisure, family time, and community development.
Our route includes Birmingham New Street, the busiest station outside London and a key hub connecting England, Scotland, and Wales, with hundreds of services daily.
About the role (External)
What does a Track Operative do?
Our rail network carries thousands of passenger and freight trains daily, which causes natural wear and tear that our Track Operatives repair.
The railway track comprises rails, sleepers, fasteners, switches, ballast, and foundations, each supporting train movement. Our Track Operatives ensure these components are maintained in excellent condition to keep services safe and uninterrupted.
Using technology and manual inspections, Network Rail monitors railway assets 24/7. Maintenance teams are briefed at each shift's start on the work to be completed.
As an entry-level role, Track Operatives support and learn from Track Technicians and Team Leaders, which may involve fetching, carrying, and operating maintenance tools. Teamwork and safety are crucial, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds. Full training on hand tools and machinery is provided. Successful learners may progress to Track Technicians.
Work often occurs at night or weekends to minimize service disruption and enhance safety. Flexibility in shift patterns is important; schedules are provided in advance. Candidates should be prepared to work in all weather conditions and may have on-call duties.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to start a career in the Railway sector, especially for those passionate about making a difference.
Please note: Candidates must live within a 60-minute radius of the stated location and hold a valid Driving Licence.
