Salary range: £26,000 - £31,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights + £5,319 London Weighting

Location: London, The Lighthouse, W12. Up to 5 days a week in the office depending on the business needs each week.

Job Introduction

R&D plays a critical role in supporting the BBC's ambitions as a public service media organisation, working with external partners to shape and develop capabilities for the transition to an internet-only BBC.

Following the restructure of R&D and embedding of the local end user and infrastructure support into the new Foundation applied research area, we have an opportunity for an Operations Technician to join an R&D team in managing our technical facilities in our London office. Our Operation Technicians offer engineering and technical support within research laboratories and other similar technical facilities.

Interview process

Virtual Interview - approximately one hour of technical and values-based questions, including a 'Show & Tell' question on some soldering / a physical engineering project you've worked on.

Main responsibilities

Respond to Support Tickets

o Respond to incoming helpdesk tickets
o Skilled in evaluating and resolving issues for users across a wide variety of tasks.

Technical Space Management

o Maintenance and organisation of Laboratories, technical spaces and storage areas.

Health & Safety

o Assisting in the creation of risk assessments and good working practices for users of technical areas and any associated documentation.
o Maintaining electrical equipment for safe use including monitoring for safety and arranging calibration and servicing when required, both ad-hoc and a rolling programme of portable appliance testing and associated record keeping.
o Install equipment safely.

Procurement

o Purchasing non-IT technical items on behalf of project teams and keeping stocks of consumables at agreed levels.

Experiment / Event Support

o Providing technical assistance to staff in their project work.
o Assisting with the set-up and de-rigging of experiments, including small scale wiring and cabling of bays of equipment.
o Setting up and running technical facilities at short notice in support of specific events, such as cross-site presentations and technical projects and demonstrations.

Asset Management

o Using and keeping up to date relevant asset systems to record and track all equipment.
o Manage hardware and software assets across the R&D department, including inventory tracking, asset assignment, and hardware lifecycle management.

PAT Testing

o Experience in performing PAT Testing is desirable but not essential.

Documentation

o Create clear and detailed documentation, including technical solutions derived from helpdesk tickets, step-by-step guides, troubleshooting procedures, and comprehensive business-as-usual processes to ensure smooth ongoing operations.

Are you the right candidate

Essential

• Experience of day-to-day management/organisation of a technical facility.
• Experience fault-finding in scientific, electronic, broadcast or other systems.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good IT knowledge, and experience of using email, word-processing and spreadsheet applications.
• Experience in inspection and repair of electronic equipment.
• Familiarity with soldering.
• An ability to look for ways to continuously improve the service provided to project teams and individuals.
• Experience in operational support of scientific or engineering teams.
• Excellent communication and people skills, both in person and over a range of online tools.
• The ability to work proactively and be self-motivated when working in isolation as well as part of a larger team.
• A good understanding of electrical safety.
• Experience creating risk assessments for hazardous activities.

Desirable

• Experience with using a ticketing system to manage workload and demands.
• Running an asset tracking and/or PAT testing programme for a technical facility.
• Knowledge of problem-solving methodologies.

A general knowledge of analogue and digital, audio and video systems.
