Job description
Overview

Are you looking to start a career in the rail industry or looking for a career change?

DB Cargo UK is on an ambitious journey to become Europe’s leading rail logistics provider with a long-term plan to shift traffic from roads, protect our climate and grow the economy. To achieve this, we are looking for an Operations Supervisor to join us as part of our groundstaff team. As an Operation Supervisor you’ll be on the go each day, overseeing the preparation of our trains to ensure they go out safely each time.

Rail is one of the safest and most eco-friendly means of transport with one single freight train able to carry enough materials to build 30 houses. Our services replace the equivalent of over 22 million truck movements every year, saving 7 million tonnes of carbon emissions! As an Operations Supervisor you’ll be directly contributing to reducing carbon emissions and shifting traffic from roads to the rail.

Responsibilities
  • Ensuring the safe operation of trains in all aspects of the LDC
  • PIC (Person in Charge) of the location
  • Plan the whole operation for the location – shunting, loading, unloading, inspections etc
  • Responsible for the performance of the location
  • Liaise with other sections of DB (engineers, managers, drivers), customers and any visitors/contractors
  • Instruct and control both mobile operatives and drivers during their shift
  • Manage multiple trains arriving and departing, and other on-site operations
  • Problem solving and forward planning
  • Train preparation; shunting, marshalling
  • Site Operator including loads examination, Auto Hopper and Side Tipper operations
  • Work with the rostering and planning teams to resource the LDC (Local Distribution Centre)
  • Any other duties to ensure the train plan is delivered
  • You will directly contribute to our service delivery and have the opportunity to influence the service we offer to our customers.
  • The role will cover a varied number of customer sites, DB Cargo UK sites and infrastructure worksites as required.
  • You will be required to work outside in all weather conditions come rain or shine.
  • Your standard hours of work will be 35 hours per week. Flexibility is a must as Freight never stops, so naturally this role will involve working shift patterns which includes unsociable hours.
Qualifications

If you’re looking for a career change or a new challenge this role could be the perfect fit for you!

Previous rail experience would be a bonus, however, this is not essential as we offer full training to ensure that you’d be ready to take on the role by yourself and help us in our journey to shift freight from road to rail.

To be successful in the Operations Supervisor role you’ll need…

  • To be highly motivated and committed to your work
  • Have a flexible approach to shift working
  • Have the ability to lead operations and a team
  • Experience of teamwork and lone working
  • Be extremely safety focused
  • You must have a full UK manual driving license and be located within a 60 minute commute of the hub location.
Benefits
  • In return, we offer the following benefits package:
  • Full training into the role (5 weeks residential training)
  • Starting salary: £33,616 per annum plus shift allowance of £3,936 per annum
  • Following probationary period: £36,121 per annum + £3,936 Per Annum
  • Company pension scheme
  • 31 days paid holiday each year in addition to 2 public holidays
