Job description

Help us make a difference as an Operations Manager

A quick look at the role
The Operations Manager will oversee the day-to-day running of the contract, acting as the main point of contact for the client and sub-contractors. Responsibilities include managing site operatives, ensuring compliance with Health, Safety and Environmental standards, and controlling operational costs. The role also involves managing waste streams in line with contractual, legal and permit requirements, and supporting a strong safety-first culture on site.

Join a Landmark Project, Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station
Biffa’s Specialist Services Industrial Division has secured the waste management contract for the build of Sizewell C, a major nuclear power station development in Suffolk.

With a projected 9 to 12-year construction period, this high-profile project mirrors our successful work at Hinkley Point C. Operations will eventually move to a purpose-built Waste Consolidation Centre, but initially, our team will manage the contract directly from the client’s site, overseeing collections, subcontractors, reporting, invoicing, and waste consultancy.

Your core responsibilities.

  • Monitor, manage and coordinate all contract resources to drive productivity and improve service quality.
  • Ensure service delivery meets KPIs while promoting best practice and continuous improvement in cost control and profitability.
  • Support the development of operatives and staff by identifying and sharing best practice.
  • Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety, Environmental, Employment legislation and Company policies.
  • Manage the full contract P&L, delegating accountability where appropriate, and support year-on-year financial growth.
  • Collaborate with cross-divisional teams to deliver integrated recycling solutions through continuous improvement.
  • Plan labour in line with volume forecasts to ensure optimal staffing levels across site and transport operations.
  • Monitor shift performance against operational targets, ensuring effective resource management to achieve KPIs.
  • Maintain a strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail in all operational areas.

Our essential requirements.

  • A-Levels or Degree, ideally with qualifications in Business, Waste Management, or Health & Safety (NEBOSH/IOSH).
  • CPC and CoTC certifications preferred.
  • Proven experience as an Operations Manager or in a similar role within services or manufacturing.
  • Strong background in people management and Health & Safety compliance.
  • Demonstrated success in meeting service delivery KPIs and driving continuous improvement.
  • Solid understanding of P&L management and Lean methodologies.

And here’s why you’ll love it at Biffa.

  • Ongoing career development, training and coaching – Because if you don’t grow, we don’t grow.
  • Competitive salary.
  • Generous pension scheme.
  • Retail and leisure discounts.
  • Holiday and travel discounts.
  • Life cover.
