Job Introduction

Engineering Operations is part of BBC Technology Group. The department actively helps BBC programme makers create and deliver great content across radio, TV and online.

Engineering Operations provides 24/7/365 support for hundreds of TV, Radio & music recording studios, edit suites, digital production & playout systems, and a wide range of underpinning technologies and infrastructure.

Our highly skilled Broadcast Engineers provide a critical engineering support service to maintain production and broadcasting of many BBC channels and platforms which include domestic TV, Radio, News, Parliament, Weather, and World Service TV & Radio.

This support spans various sites in London, from the BBC headquarters at Broadcasting House to Millbank’s Westminster office, Maida Vale music recording studios and to numerous international offices.

  • 1 hour technical and values based competency interview (in person)

Main Responsibilities

This is an engineering role. Candidates will be required to demonstrate strong and wide-ranging technical knowledge along with the communication skills necessary to discuss technical issues with people at all levels.

It is essential that role holders understand the needs of the business and the pressures faced by production teams.

Broadcast Engineers are on the frontline, responsible for delivering high quality, rapid response support to ensure that equipment and systems used to create, capture, manipulate and distribute BBC content meet targets for availability, performance and safety. The role demands excellent analytical and fault finding skills and the ability to repair faulty equipment.

Are you the right candidate?

As a Broadcast Engineer, You Will Have

  • Engineering experience of working on broadcast systems in a live TV, Radio, or multi-media environment.
  • Considerable experience of diagnosing and fixing technically complex problems across a variety of broadcast systems.
  • Demonstrable theoretical and practical knowledge of audio and video broadcast systems including both analogue and digital platforms.
  • Experience with Graphics (e.g. VizRT) and editing software solutions.
  • Experience of studio automation and robotic systems.
  • Experience of repairing electronic and mechanical faults on technical equipment.
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate clearly using a range of styles, tools and techniques to explain technical issues to a wide range of people.
  • Experience of providing a high quality service in a demanding environment.
  • Logical application of engineering knowledge in unfamiliar troubleshooting situations.
  • Excellent ability to identify requirements and to recognise whether these can be met effectively from the resources, timescales skills and funds available.
  • Knowledge of broadcast networks and experience of remote access via VPN, mstsc, iLo and VMWare.
  • Experience in managing conflicting demands in high pressure situations where priorities are rapidly changing.
  • Awareness of all aspects of Health and Safety, particularly competence in electrical safety within broadcast environments, including inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
  • Willingness to travel abroad if the role requires it.
