Local Government and Communities South East: Cost and Commercial Lead

The opportunity

As part of the Local Government and Communities sector operating across England and Wales, you will be integral to the exciting development plans of the South East Region. Working across projects and programmes in Local Government, Residential and Regeneration, Sports and Leisure, Universities, Arts, Culture and Heritage, and Blue Light services.

You will lead the Cost and Commercial Management Discipline across the Local Government Business Unit in the South East, working alongside the Project and Programme Management Lead, forming part of the operational leadership team in the South. You will take responsibility for end-to-end service delivery, often on large and complex projects, portfolios, and programmes. You will develop the Cost and Commercial Service strategy to support regional growth and identify opportunities to expand our service lines to meet client needs.

The successful candidate will coordinate with the CCM discipline lead for Local Government and Communities and other regional CCM leads to align services, resource planning, training, and share service excellence. Reporting to the Regional Lead for Local Government and Communities South.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to the development of strategic management plans.
  • Providing line management and overseeing recruitment.
  • Managing resources to achieve regional objectives in compliance with business unit requirements, regulations, and best practices, ensuring operational productivity and improvements.
  • Leading Quality Assurance across the discipline, ensuring compliance with the Mace Way process.
  • Leading teams of professionals on large projects or as technical specialists recognized as experts.
  • Managing senior client relationships within the region.
  • Engaging with clients strategically, identifying leads and opportunities, and supporting business development efforts.
  • Implementing the Mace Way standards within the region, integrating best practices into the business unit and global standards.
  • Meeting client service expectations, managing multiple relationships, and promoting our service offerings.
  • Communicating success stories, best practices, and innovations internally and externally.
  • Identifying, coaching, and mentoring talent, supporting professional development.
  • Contributing to assurance and audit regimes to ensure service excellence and capturing lessons learned.
  • Supporting business growth and market positioning through account development and relationship management.
  • Managing contracts, commercial procedures, and business unit budget/P&L.
  • Analyzing business opportunities and risks proactively.
  • Having a detailed understanding of construction technology, planning, delivery, logistics, sustainability, and legal issues.
  • Exercising excellent communication skills.
  • Engaging, motivating, and coaching others, acting as a role model and culture carrier.
  • Persuading and influencing colleagues, delegating tasks appropriately.
  • Supporting regional team growth.
  • Engaging in external networking, collaboration, and business development.
  • Managing conflicting demands and priorities effectively.

About you

You hold a bachelor’s degree and are a member of a relevant institute. You have a proven track record of winning and delivering projects for public sector clients. You possess good knowledge of contracts, estimating, valuations, cost reporting, and financial modeling. Your skills include negotiation, influence, and professional communication at all levels.

You are digitally savvy, capable of building lasting client relationships, and leading high-performing teams within a commercial environment. You have a cost consultancy practice and are eager to grow your career with the opportunities Mace offers.
