Job description

Our prestigious client is the leading processor and recycler of WEEE waste in the UK. Through the expertise of their people and investment in technology, they promote and deliver sustainable recycling solutions for WEEE. Established for over 35 years, they have major contracts with local authorities, utility companies, and businesses alike.

As a result of continuous business growth, they are looking to expand their team by recruiting an Operations Director. This is an exciting opportunity to advance your career and join a well-established and successful team.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 07:00 am to 5:00 pm; Saturday, 07:00 am to 12:00 pm. (Flexible/site operational hours)

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic leadership for all recycling and waste processing sites.
  • Take full accountability for operational, financial, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Lead and develop the senior management team, including supervisors, managers, and maintenance teams, to achieve company goals.
  • Monitor incoming and outgoing loads, processing levels, compile statistics, and produce reports.
  • Manage company infrastructure, transfer stations, and processing machinery.
  • Champion Health & Safety by setting policies, ensuring consistent implementation, reviewing risk assessments, and safety procedures.
  • Oversee all people management activities across sites, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and disciplinary procedures.
  • Monitor and control budgets, overseeing profit and loss, cost centers, and operational expenditure. Drive cost savings without compromising safety or quality.
  • Ensure effective scheduling and resource planning, including staff scheduling and demand coverage.
  • Act as the escalation point for operational issues, customer concerns, or emergencies.
  • Ensure maintenance management of plant, vehicles, and infrastructure, including record-keeping.
  • Promote operational excellence by standardising processes, sharing best practices, and driving continuous improvement.
  • Ensure environmental compliance with permits, records, and waste handling procedures.
  • Produce accurate operational and financial reports for senior management.
  • Foster a high-performance culture emphasizing teamwork, accountability, safety, and customer service.
Requirements:
  • WAMITAB Level 4 qualification and CPC Managers Qualification.
  • Significant experience at GM/Operations Director level in waste management, recycling, logistics, or heavy industry.
  • Proven leadership of multi-site operations with large teams.
  • Strong financial and commercial management skills, including budget responsibility.
  • Expert knowledge of Health & Safety legislation (NEBOSH or IOSH preferred).
  • Ability to analyze data and produce reports.
  • Understanding of environmental regulations in the waste industry.
  • Track record of change management and process improvements.
  • Excellent IT skills: MS Office, SAP, Power BI.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Desirable: 360 excavator, HGV, forklift licenses; full UK driving license with willingness to travel.
