The opportunity
Due to increased Project expansion, our client is currently seeking an experienced Operations Delivery Director to become responsible for the technical, operational and commercial outputs across all of major projects. You will be the focal point for the team who deliver turnkey technical solutions across a wide range of UK national infrastructure sectors including nuclear and defence.

The role
As the Delivery Director, you ll work alongside senior management to ensure the successful outcomes for our strategic plans and financial goals. This role involves end-to-end accountabilities for all aspects of delivery within the business including operational and technical guidance both businesses as usual and strategic outcomes.

Working closely with the Managing Director and the Senior Leadership Team you ll drive performance to achieve ambitious financial targets, maintain first-class service delivery, and develop high-value client relationships.
You will advise and input into any commercial discussions related to projects technical, sales and workshop investment under your control. In addition, you will contribute to disseminating lessons learned and leading the updating of client processes and procedures, if required.

Your duties and responsibilities will be

  • Provide technical leadership and be at the forefront of industry trends, areas of improvement to allow us to move forward into larger and more complex projects.
  • Create, drive and manage a technical roadmap highlighting future technical and resource trends and plan accordingly
  • Contract management ensure that the client delivers the project as per the terms and conditions agreed to in the contract and that all variations are captured and appropriately billed. Where possible, add milestone payments and favourable payment terms.
  • Project delivery ensure that all aspects of the Project Process are followed so that each project is delivered on time, on budget and to a high safety standard. Ensure the highest standard of quality and deliverables during all phases from start-up to closure.
  • Experience in risk management strategies and how to apply the same
  • Ensure each project has all necessary engineering documentation produced to a high standard and peer-reviewed before execution. Support junior managers with your experience and knowledge to deliver exceptional solutions for our clients.
  • Performance Management: Specify, monitor, and report against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to measure operational effectiveness.
  • Lead the operational performance strategy to ensure targets are met.
  • Capacity Building: Recruit, train, and develop a skilled workforce capable of navigating complex client requirements. Ensure staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge required to deliver effective and profitable results.
  • Drive strategic leadership by developing input to business plans with support teams, while ensuring alignment with broader company goals.
  • Oversee financial performance, meeting or exceeding budgeted targets and closely monitoring contract budgets for financial health.
  • Lead team development by mentoring Managers and direct reports, fostering a culture of respect, engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure health & safety compliance, upholding our management systems and spearheading initiatives to enhance safety practices across the team.

You will have the following qualifications and experience

- Proven leadership experience at director level, with a successful track record in managing operations and technical compliance.

- Strong financial acumen, including experience overseeing revenues exceeding £15 million and ensuring robust budget management.

- Solid contract delivery experience and how to apply this to ensure financial and technical compliance.

- Understanding of core project management processes such as project preparation, quality, project structures, planning, risk management, contracts, costs & finance, project execution, leadership, teamwork & communication.

- Professional certifications such as Prince 2, PMP, or APM, or have a minimum of 5 years demonstrable industry experience of working within a Prince2 environment.

- Proficiency in leading technical teams and how to constantly improve the team to prepare for future trends and client requirements.

- Strong knowledge of applicable industry regulations, safety standards, and best practices, (Defence or Nuclear establishments).

- Able to learn new techniques and procedures quickly and ensure quality and attention to detail standards remain high.

- Able to solve ad-hoc problems quickly with clearly defined solutions.

- Degree in related business or technical discipline or have in excess of 10 years industry experience in a similar role.

- Senior Operations and Technical leadership experience within the Welding and Fabrication business area in the Defence and Nuclear markets, or a closely related sector.

- Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams. Committed to building high performing teams to aid the client growth strategy.

- Track record of driving safety, compliance, and operational improvement.

- Exceptional client relationship management skills, with strengths in contract retention and business development.

- Data-driven mindset, with experience using KPIs and reporting tools to monitor and improve performance.

- Comfortable operating at both strategic and business as usual levels.

- High level of drive, self-motivation and self-management ability.

- Security clearance, or the ability to obtain one, is required for working on regulated industry projects.
