Job description

Operational Assets and Facilities Manager

We’re recruiting an experienced manager to take responsibility for operational equipment and premises across a business with multiple locations.

This is a hands‑on leadership role combining asset management, maintenance, facilities compliance and operational improvement. You’ll help ensure equipment is available when needed, sites operate safely and investment delivers lasting value.

The position involves regular travel between operational sites and requires a full UK driving licence.

The opportunity

You’ll oversee the lifecycle of operational assets, coordinate maintenance and lead improvements to the systems used to track equipment, condition and availability. Alongside this, you’ll manage premises, contractors and budgets, working closely with operational colleagues to support changing demand.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and develop technical and maintenance colleagues, setting priorities, reviewing performance and ensuring appropriate skills and cover.

  • Manage equipment from specification and purchasing through deployment, servicing, replacement and disposal.

  • Lead the introduction or improvement of an asset management system, including data preparation, implementation, training and ongoing accuracy.

  • Improve visibility of equipment location, condition, usage and inspection requirements.

  • Plan maintenance around operational demand, reducing downtime and improving turnaround.

  • Provide technical input into customer requirements, proposed solutions and project planning.

  • Forecast equipment requirements and prepare business cases for investment.

  • Oversee buildings, yards and other operational premises, coordinating repairs, security, utilities and contracted services.

  • Maintain planned maintenance and inspection schedules for equipment and property.

  • Ensure applicable health, safety and statutory requirements are met, with accurate records and timely completion of corrective actions.

  • Coordinate specialist testing and quality checks where required, ensuring unsuitable equipment is removed from service until cleared for use.

  • Select and manage contractors, monitoring safety, service quality and value.

  • Control expenditure, prepare forecasts and explain budget variances.

  • Identify practical improvements that reduce waste, equipment losses, unnecessary movement and operating costs.

  • Report on asset availability, maintenance, compliance, expenditure and improvement activity.

About you

You’ll bring management experience in operational assets, facilities or maintenance, together with the confidence to balance daily priorities and longer-term improvements.

Your background could include equipment hire, logistics, utilities, industrial services or another environment where reliable equipment and well‑managed premises are essential.

You will need:

  • Experience leading technical or maintenance teams.

  • A sound understanding of compliance requirements for operational premises and equipment.

  • Experience managing maintenance programmes, suppliers and contractors.

  • Confidence managing budgets and evaluating expenditure.

  • Practical knowledge of asset registers, maintenance software or inventory systems.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work effectively across several locations.

  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly.

Relevant facilities, asset management or health and safety qualifications would be useful. Experience introducing new systems, applying Lean principles or improving operational processes would also be welcomed.
