Job summary

Newcastle University is recruiting a Software Engineer for the NIHR Innovation Observatory. You will build OpenScan's cloud data platform, focusing on ingestion, processing, and backend integration within a small, agile team.

You’ll collaborate with the Lead Software Engineer and Product Manager to deliver high-quality code and scalable infrastructure, including data ingestion pipelines and backend services, while exploring AI tooling and modern development practices.

Qualifications

• Proficient in Python with experience building real-world applications
• Experience with data ingestion, processing, or scraping workflows
• Familiarity with Git/GitHub and collaborative development
• Knowledge of cloud environments (preferably AWS)
• Strong focus on code quality, testing and documentation
• Willingness to learn across backend and infrastructure layers
• Awareness of Agile or Kanban software development practices

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend features in Python as part of OpenScan’s core infrastructure
• Contribute to ingestion, crawling, and data processing pipelines
• Work with NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB) and version control tools (GitHub)
• Help shape and improve coding practices as the platform matures
• Collaborate with internal users to refine data flows and backend functionality
• Support integration with frontend applications and API endpoints
• Contribute to continuous delivery through a Kanban-based workflow
• Learn and engage with evolving stack, including AI and modular development
