Job summary

Training Provider is seeking an Open Spaces Apprentice to learn essential grounds maintenance skills while contributing to the upkeep of town parks, allotments and open spaces through a Level 2 apprenticeship.

You will work alongside experienced maintenance staff, gain hands-on experience in planting, weed control, litter collection and waste handling, and learn to follow risk assessments and health and safety procedures in outdoor environments.

Qualifications

• Experience in grounds maintenance or outdoor spaces is beneficial.
• Willingness to learn and follow safety procedures.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Support grounds maintenance activities such as planting, weed control, litter collection and waste handling.
• Assist with upkeep of parks, allotments and open spaces to keep areas welcoming and safe.
• Follow risk assessments and safe working practices at all times.
• Support community events and environmental projects as required.

Salary: National Minimum Wage for Apprentices — £15,392 a year

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a keen interest in pursuing a career within open spaces. You’ll work alongside experienced maintenance staff to learn essential skills and contribute to the upkeep of town-owned parks and open spaces, whilst undertaking a level 2 apprenticeship.

As an Open Spaces Apprentice, you will play an important role in helping to maintain and improve the town’s parks, allotments, sports pitches, open spaces and community areas.

Your duties will include:

• Supporting and carrying out a range of grounds maintenance activities, including planting, minor landscaping, weed control, leaf collection, watering, litter picking and waste collection
• Assisting with the upkeep of allotments, parks, sports pitches, open spaces and other Town Council properties to ensure they remain welcoming, safe and well maintained
• Identifying opportunities to improve open spaces and contribute ideas that enhance the appearance and sustainability of the local environment
• Following risk assessments, health and safety procedures and safe working practices at all times
• Taking a proactive approach to resolving issues such as graffiti, vandalism, fly-posting, damage and general untidiness, supporting clean-up and improvement work where appropriate
• Cutting back brambles, shrubs and overgrown vegetation to keep pathways accessible and public areas looking their best
• Carrying out minor repairs and landscaping tasks to improve the appearance and usability of outdoor spaces
• Using a variety of tools, equipment and machinery safely and effectively under supervision
• Supporting community events and environmental projects taking place across the town
• Providing assistance and cover for Open Spaces Assistants and undertaking other duties as reasonably required by the Open Spaces Supervisor

This is a hands-on role that offers the opportunity to work outdoors in a variety of locations, helping to create and maintain attractive public spaces that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors throughout the year.
