British Scouting Overseas is seeking a trustee for Southern Europe to provide leadership and oversight. This voluntary role supports volunteers delivering programs to young people globally. Candidates of any nationality are welcome, with a focus on commitment to Scout values and governance.
May 20, 2025
BSO Southern Europe wishes to appoint an additional trustee. Our trustee board provides collective leadership and oversight of the charity, supporting our volunteers who deliver our programme to young people worldwide.
The Trustee Board’s role is to support our volunteer line managers through the District Lead Volunteer and District Chair, enabling them to succeed in supporting leadership teams to deliver our programme.
You may be of any nationality and live anywhere in the world; the only requirement is that you are willing and able to fulfill the duties of a trustee and bring a constructive, independent-minded approach. We are especially interested in applications from younger adults and encourage candidates from Southern Europe.
BSO is part of the UK Scout Association, headquartered in Gilwell Park, London. BSO members have access to the same resources, support, and programmes as UK-based Scout groups. BSO supports British families living abroad by providing a UK Scouting programme for expatriate British children and several British Overseas Territories.
Our goal is to ensure all members experience high-quality UK Scouting while providing support and advice to adult members worldwide. BSO conducts activities in a safe, adaptable environment respecting local customs and policies set by The Scout Association.
We operate 57 Scout Groups, 22 Explorer Units, and 3 Scout Networks, supporting 2,997 young people via 936 adult volunteers across 30 countries.
Many volunteers deliver programmes directly with young people, while others support through training, mentoring, governance, and resources, in roles ranging from trusteeship to marketing and skills assessment.
BSO is inclusive, welcoming all who share our values, and aims to foster personal development and positive societal contributions among young people.
Applicants of any nationality and location are welcome; the key is a willingness to serve as a trustee.
The primary requirement is a commitment to Scout values and to supporting the Board. Additional skills in areas such as administration, data protection, development planning, finance, governance, media, risk management, or safety are advantageous.
The trustee role is voluntary, but reasonable expenses may be reimbursed.
Trustees serve three-year terms, up to a maximum of nine years, and must not be disqualified under UK law from serving as a charity trustee. Successful candidates will confirm their eligibility via a statement. Mandatory online training is required.
The Board meets four times annually, plus an AGM, with additional meetings as needed, all held online via Microsoft Teams.
Interested candidates should contact the Interim District Chair, Chris Preston, using the contact details below.

The 26th World Scout Jamboree will be held in Gdansk, Poland, in summer 2027. The UK Scout Association plans to send a large contingent, including units representing each UK region, based on young people's numbers.
The UK Scout Association also offers Good Service Awards to recognize volunteers' dedication and service.
Our priority is safeguarding and the wellbeing of young people in all our activities.
