The Cancer and Haematology Centre is a large teaching and tertiary referral centre for patients in the Thames Valley region. There are over 40 Oncologists providing specialist treatments for all types of cancer. The Oncology ward is a 24 bedded ward, caring for patients who have been admitted with complications of cancer or its treatment. Patients are also admitted for routine procedures.

The post holder will be supported by a highly skilled and knowledgeable nursing, and palliative care team. There is clinical supervision from a Consultant and Registrar dedicated to the ward 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

This post would suit a doctor seeking more general medical experience or a GP wanting to gain oncology/palliative care experience, or a core trainee needing time to build their CV or explore research opportunities in Oxford.

The post is for 12 months.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be 1 of 6 doctors covering the Oncology ward. There are 2 other CMT, one FY2 and 2 FY1 doctors. We expect the post holder to manage the day-to-day medical care of Oncology patients on the ward.

There are twice daily handovers and Consultant and Registrar led ward rounds. The post holder will be expected to review patients independently some of the time.

The post holder will participate on an on call rota, which involves hospital at night covering Oncology and Haematology inpatients. There is a Registrar on site for all the on call shifts. Acute admissions are assessed in a dedicated 4 bedded 7 day Triage unit with highly experienced nursing support.

The post holder will be expected to attend weekly Registrar delivered teaching and have the opportunity to experience outpatient clinics. In addition, there are opportunities to perform and attend departmental audit and morbidity/mortality meetings.
