On Train Cleaner

Based at Birmingham New Street

Full-Time Permanent basis, 37 hours per week

As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.

We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service by investing in our fleet, stations, and employees. We are looking to recruit an On Train Cleaner to work on a full-time permanent basis at Birmingham New Street.

This vital role ensures the train environment meets our customers' needs. You will carry out delegated cleaning duties in accordance with agreed procedures.

What does the job involve?

1. Working under the instruction of the Depot Manager.
2. Carrying out delegated cleaning duties as per agreed procedures, including litter picking, graffiti removal, sticker removal, cleaning and replenishing toilets, cleaning bio-hazards, and safe disposal of sharps.
3. Using specialist cleaning chemicals and equipment.
4. Taking responsibility for the materials and equipment provided.
5. Completing audit sheets as required.
6. Disposing of rubbish correctly.
7. Taking units to Outstations as needed.
8. Reporting non-conformances to supervisors or depot managers.
9. Replacing full bin liners and relining bins on trains.
10. Fitting seat reservation labels and promotional materials as required.
11. Ensuring compliance with environmental and safety procedures, including ISO14001 standards.
12. Carrying out activities safely and reporting incidents immediately.
13. Interacting professionally with passengers and train crew.
14. Topping up screen washer bottles.
15. Wearing the provided uniform and maintaining a professional appearance.
16. Performing cleaning duties at other locations as needed.
17. Cleaning mess rooms and toilet facilities on a rotational basis.
18. Conducting periodic inspections of official walking routes and reporting defects.

What skills and experience do I need?

• Knowledge of cleaning procedures and chemicals.
• Good communication skills, both written and oral.
• Driving license is advantageous.
• COSHH awareness.
• PTS and DP certifications.
• Ability to operate hand points.
• First Aid at Work (voluntary).
• Knowledge of cleaning performance regimes.
• Bio-hazard and sharps certification.
• Emergency train evacuation procedures.
• HOT protocol awareness.
• Customer awareness and safety certifications.
