An on-call firefighter is a paid person employed by the fire and rescue service who is ‘on call’ to respond to emergencies and engage with their community. They balance everyday lives and jobs until their pager sounds, then they become professional firefighters.
The role may be considered ‘part-time’, but on-call firefighters are trained and experienced professionals on the front line, saving lives and protecting communities. They are paid for their services, receive thorough training, and learn vital emergency and personal skills.
On-call firefighters come from all community areas, including those who are at home, employed full or part-time, self-employed, studying, or currently unemployed. They are dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to support the fire and rescue service and protect their communities.
This role is demanding but rewarding, offering the chance to make a significant contribution. You will build close working relationships with team members, especially during emergencies, and participate in community events.
On-call firefighters respond to a variety of situations beyond fires, including community fire safety, flooding, co-responding, road accidents, chemical spills, and animal rescues.
Previous Experience: No prior experience is necessary as comprehensive training is provided. Enthusiasm and meeting essential requirements are crucial. Physical fitness is vital, as the role requires the ability to reach the fire station quickly and safely after being alerted, which can be physically demanding.
Note: To apply, you must live or work within 4 minutes of the Fire Station. Applications from those outside this radius will be automatically rejected.
