An on-call firefighter is a paid person employed by the fire and rescue service who is ‘on call’ to respond to emergencies and engage with their community. They have everyday lives and jobs until their pager sounds, then they become professional firefighters.
The work may be called ‘part-time’, but on-call firefighters are trained and experienced, saving lives and protecting community assets. They are paid for their services, receive thorough training, and learn about emergency situations and personal skills.
On-call firefighters come from all areas of the community, including men and women who are at home, in employment, self-employed, studying, or unemployed. They dedicate their time to assist the fire and rescue service and protect their communities.
This demanding role offers the chance to make a real contribution. You will build close working relationships with team members, essential during emergencies, and participate in community events.
On-call firefighters respond to a variety of situations beyond fires, such as community fire safety, flooding, co-responding, road accidents, chemical spills, and animal rescues.
Previous Experience: No prior experience is necessary as a comprehensive training programme is provided. Enthusiasm and meeting essential requirements are key. You must be able to reach the fire station quickly and safely after alert, which requires good physical fitness.
Note: To be eligible, you must live or work within 4 minutes of the Fire Station; otherwise, your application will be rejected.
