An on-call firefighter is a paid person employed by the fire and rescue service who is ‘on call’ to respond to emergencies and engage with the community. They have everyday lives and jobs until their pager sounds, then they become professional firefighters.
The role may be considered ‘part-time,’ but on-call firefighters are trained, experienced, and on the front line, saving lives and protecting community assets. They are paid for their services, receive thorough training, and develop emergency and personal skills.

This demanding role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution. Teamwork is essential, especially during emergencies, and the role involves attending community events and participating in various emergency responses such as fire safety, flooding, road accidents, chemical spills, and animal rescues.
Previous Experience: No prior experience is necessary as training is provided. Essential qualities include enthusiasm, physical fitness, and the ability to reach the fire station quickly after being alerted. Physical fitness is crucial due to the demanding nature of the role.
