Older Persons Mental Health Nurse

The closing date is 22 August 2025

We are seeking a compassionate, motivated and professional Registered Mental Health/General/Learning Disability Nurse to compliment our supportive Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) inpatient team. We provide patient centered, holistic assessment and support for people living with an advanced dementia who are experiencing complex and distressing symptoms. We also provide ongoing support to patient's carers, recognising the essential and valuable role they play. We provide a supportive learning environment for all staff, including newly qualified registrants and the ongoing development for all nurses.

We work closely with our sister OPMH ward at Gosport War Memorial. Our sister ward provides assessment and treatment for Older Adults experiencing a crisis in their Mental Health.

This vacancy is for our dementia ward however to support continued development, the successful candidate will be encouraged to work across both of our wards to provide opportunity to develop core mental health skills in a functional mental health and dementia ward setting.

Due to the potential complex health needs of Older Adults, our teams are also supported and required to develop physical health assessment skills to ensure the safe and early recognition of the deteriorating patient.

All staff will be asked to work flexibly across a range of day and night shifts providing care to older people with functional mental health needs or with dementia.

Main duties of the job

The Mental Health Nurse in Inpatient Services is a core member of the ward team. They will act as a 'named nurse' for a specific group of inpatients on the ward and take responsibility for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of their nursing care needs.

The nurse will take clinical leadership of the ward environment on a shift by shift basis as required working in a way that promotes the principles of recovery to ensure individualised, safe and effective care provision for all patients. In the absence of the ward manager/deputy they will also take the necessary managerial action to ensure compliance with organisational and stakeholder requirements.
