Upper GI/Hepatobiliary (HPB) Specialist Nurse

Do you like to be challenged, work within a supportive multi-disciplinary team and provide high quality care? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic nurse with proven experience as a senior band 5/6 nurse, working with people affected by UGI/HPB cancers and a good understanding of both local and national cancer guidelines and pathways to join our team to join our Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) and Hepatobiliary (HPB) specialist cancer nursing team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.

Working across the speciality and wards, contributing to the delivery and development of Upper GI Serviceusing effective evidence-based practice in line with agreed national standards for clinical practice. Passionate about ensuring the highest standards of patient centred care are provided and continuously improving experiences for patients, families and carers, working both independently and as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team. Acting as a key worker for a clinical caseload of patients at different points in the care pathway, working to coordinate care and provide easy access for on-going support for patients with Upper GI/HPB cancer.

For this role you will need to have current NMC Nursing registration with post qualification experience.

Possession of excellent communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills coupled with evidence of continuing professional development are essential.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would be expected to work as part of the team to deliver high standards of patient care responsive to patient's needs.

The post holder will possess the ability to be able to work alone and with the wider supporting team, and work collaboratively with external agencies. You will be expected to demonstrate and role model the uppermost professional standards.

Job responsibilities

To support the development and coordinate the delivery of the oesophago-gastric & hepatobiliary service through the use of effective evidence based practice in line with agreed national standards for patient safety and clinical practice/excellence.

Use your clinical skills & knowledge to support patients within the community setting & avoid hospital admissions when appropriate.

Work collaboratively, in partnership with the multidisciplinary team, develop and advise highly specialised programme of care for patients.

To work autonomously and be accountable for the planning and delivery of all aspects of patient care in relation to the OG & HPB oncology, and as set out in the NMC code.

Ability to perform independent assessments of patients & manage outcomes appropriately.

To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework to ensure the highest quality of care is provided in the safest manner.

To provide clinical leadership, expertise and specialist clinical advice and support to clinical staff on the management and care of patients within OG & HPB cancer and lead on the effective delivery of care to patients.

Advanced communication with patients, carers and health professionals in order to disseminate complex nursing and clinical information which may be of a distressing nature.

Ability to perform procedures such as drain / suture removals or a willingness to learn.

Ability to work well independently & be a supportive team member.

Attend & contribute to weekly MDT meetings, actioning outcomes as indicated and assist with recording cancer data.

To support the provision of expert specialist knowledge, care and experience to support to the wider nursing team to facilitate the effective delivery of care to patients at all times.

To lead and participate in the continuing improvement of services in line with the Trust objectives.

To lead the provision of education and training to clinical staff and internal/external agencies.
