Job description

An opportunity has arisen for an ophthalmologist to work in Ocular Oncology at one of the UK’s premier eye units.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with at least three years of postgraduate training in ophthalmology.

St. Paul’s Eye Unit, based within the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and affiliated with the University of Liverpool, currently employs sixteen substantive consultants, two clinical academics at the consultant level, two locum consultants, two clinical lecturers, three associate specialists, a specialty doctor, twelve specialist trainees, and eight sub-specialty fellows.

Applications are invited for this position, which is aimed at experienced ophthalmologists who may or may not be pursuing the competencies required for CCT. Please note, this is not a recognised training post. The expected start date is April 2026, with an initial duration of twelve months, potentially extendable if mutually agreed. The role offers opportunities for research and to benefit from various sub-specialist training programs available at this centre of excellence.

The main objective of this post is to enhance the trainee’s skills in diagnosing, treating, and monitoring adult ocular tumours, along with providing appropriate counselling and support.

Patients are initially examined by an Ocular Oncology Fellow before consultation with the Consultant Ocular Oncologist.

Treatment options for intraocular melanoma include ruthenium plaque radiotherapy, proton beam radiotherapy, trans-pupillary thermotherapy, trans-scleral local resection, trans-retinal endoresection, enucleation, and photodynamic therapy. Conjunctival tumours are managed through local excision followed by brachytherapy and/or topical chemotherapy.

Trainees will assist in surgical procedures initially, then perform surgeries under supervision, progressing to unsupervised procedures based on their aptitude and training needs.

Follow-up clinics are held every Thursday and Friday, with 30-40 patients seen weekly. Multidisciplinary meetings occur every Monday, sometimes including ophthalmic pathologists.

This role provides excellent opportunities for clinical and basic science research. Special arrangements can be made for the Ocular Oncology Fellow to receive training and maintain skills in general ophthalmology.

The role involves ward rounds following treatments for intraocular melanoma, including ruthenium and iodine plaque radiotherapy, proton beam radiotherapy, trans-pupillary thermotherapy, trans-scleral local resection, trans-retinal endoresection, and enucleation. Choroidal haemangiomas are treated with photodynamic therapy, and conjunctival tumours are managed with local excision followed by brachytherapy and/or topical chemotherapy.
