Job summary

The National Oceanography Centre is seeking an Engineering Technician for the Ocean Engineering Group in Southampton. This role covers shore-based maintenance, testing, and development of equipment used to collect oceanographic data, with occasional remote work.

The ideal candidate will have engineering qualifications (NVQ level 3 or equivalent) and a hands-on approach, with flexibility for travel and sea deployments across two vessels. Training and development are provided.

Qualifications

• Recognised engineering discipline qualifications are required.
• Hands-on workshop-based experience preferred.
• Willingness to travel and work at sea for extended periods.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, maintain and test equipment for the Ocean Engineering Group.
• Support coring and physical sampling and seismic survey systems.
• Handle winches, davits, launch and recovery systems, and portable lab gear.
• Operate mainly in a workshop, with occasional remote work as required.
• Participate in sea-going deployments on R.R.S James Cook and R.R.S Discovery.
