Job description
Overview

To support and enhance the professional occupation focused care of offenders within the service, across all sectors of care; providing occupational therapy screenings and occupational therapy interventions under the supervision of a qualified professional occupational therapist, working independently according to a plan agreed with the qualified occupational therapist and within the overall framework of the team's policies and procedures. You will work in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to enable service users to reach their recovery potential and develop the skills necessary to manage their mental illness. You will motivate service users to engage in meaningful and purposeful activity within the prison community and encourage reintegration by liaising with prison staff and other stakeholders within the prison to promote social inclusion.

Post holder to be expected to work one day per week completing generic duties with the integrated mental health team as directed by the operational manager.

Responsibilities
  • To work independently under the supervision of a registered OT as a member of the MDT.
  • Use technical, creative and psychosocial skills to assist in providing therapeutic activities for individuals/groups of service users.
  • Lead on the development of service user projects.
  • Communicate with service users and carers; provide feedback on therapeutic activities to supervisor, OT colleagues and MDT.
  • Have an awareness of social inclusion and skills development and ensure activities focus on these objectives.
  • Undertake additional delegated responsibilities as directed by OT supervisor.
  • Exercise good personal time management, punctuality, and consistent reliable attendance.
  • Support service users within HMP Wandsworth, offering a range of therapeutic activities and encourage access to work and educational activities within the prison to promote social inclusion.
  • Attend mandatory training as directed by the Trust and contribute to CPD through training and development opportunities.
  • Attend the OT Support Worker’s Development group and participate in service development at local and Trust levels.
  • Ensure relevant national and local policies are implemented; review and reflect on own practice and performance through supervision and appraisal guided by KSF.
  • Collaborate as a team member to provide programs of ward/department/wing-based therapeutic activities and use occupational, daily living, technical and psychosocial skills to promote independence, wellbeing and social inclusion.
  • Under supervision of a registered OT, facilitate/co-facilitate planned group work and individual activities; contribute to formal OT assessments and provide feedback on occupational functioning.
  • Assist and support service users to achieve their goals; engage in ongoing assessment and treatment and adjust interventions based on fluctuating needs.
  • Assist in the implementation, evaluation, and modification of OT interventions; develop and implement socially inclusive projects to meet service user needs.
  • Undertake delegated tasks to contribute to the safe and smooth running of the service.
Requirements & Additional Information
  • All applicants must be willing to undertake National Security Vetting to work in a Prison Setting (pre-employment checks through Oxleas and the prison vetting team).
  • Provide proof of right to work, proof of ID (including one photographic ID), proof of address; non-UK passport holders require correct right-to-work documentation and a Home Office Share code; 5 years address history required.
  • Police Certificate requirements depending on UK residency history; guidance is available for overseas applications.
