The Fairlie Healthcare Group is a leading provider of high-quality care which was established in 1999. We specialise in caring for adults with neurological conditions, as well as patients with tracheostomies, and who require ventilator support.

We currently have three homes, Fairlie House which is in West Norwood with 45 beds, Highfield House which is located in Purley with 45 beds and finally, Woodstown House in Banstead with 40 beds, which opened its doors to its first residents in April 2021. All three homes have achieved the highest rating from the Care Quality Commission, and we continually strive to maintain our ‘Outstanding’ rating.

Scope

To provide highly specialised occupational therapy assessment and intervention for residents with complex needs, and to provide expert advice, guidance and information to professionals, carers and relatives and other non-professionals across Three Homes (Woodstown House, Highfield House & Fairlie House). The post-holder will work autonomously and provide all aspects of occupational therapy, leading the activity team for leisure/recreation activities/sensory stimulation in a meaningful way for residents with diverse cognitive presentations and complex physical disabilities through junior staff/assistants/healthcare assistants/activity staff/family members.

What will my duties be?

  1. To be responsible for a clinical caseload and ensure that the residents receive appropriate treatment to a high professional standard, in accordance with the Professional Standards and Code of Ethics of the College of Occupational Therapist (COT). To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work.
  2. To prepare and deliver a resident-centred intervention based on a sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options, using specialist clinical assessment, reasoning skills and treatment skills. These would include 24-hour postural management, resident education, cognitive programmes/activities, ADL and IADL among other intervention options.
  3. To undertake a highly specialist assessment of neurological occupational therapy which includes cognitive assessments for PDoC such as The Wessex Head Injury Matrix (WHIM), Sensory Modality Assessment and Rehabilitation Technique (SMART), and/or The JFK Coma Recovery Scale Revised (CRS-R), as well as other cognitive assessments such as The Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA). Also, the ability to use and interpret assessment results for further therapeutic management.

What do I need to be successful?

For this role, you are required to have the following attributes:

  1. To attend management or service development meetings as a representative of the occupational therapy service.
  2. To demonstrate effective communication skills with residents and caregivers to maximize rehabilitation potential and ensure understanding of conditions. Skills in persuasion, motivation, explanation, empathy, and gaining informed consent should be used with a wide variety of residents.
  3. To encourage effective communication between all involved, anticipating barriers to communication and taking action to improve communication.
