Job description

Are you a passionate, innovative Occupational Therapist looking for a new and exciting challenge with working age males adults? An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Occupational Therapist to join our inpatients OT team based in Stockport working with predominately with working age males with mental health difficulties. Our patients come to us from many different settings needing assessment and support to remain as independent as possible. Patients can have a variety of mental and physical health conditions. The Occupational Therapy role is crucial in ensuring patients health, wellbeing and independence are appropriately assessed and facilitated. A part of the role is to support with discharge planning, working closely with the discharge social workers, including assessments on the ward and in the home setting. You will be based within a supportive team of OT's and will have the opportunity to showcase you're OT skills around both functional and organic mental health conditions. There will lots of opportunities to work alongside the wider MDT consisting of consultant psychiatrists, nurses, CPN's, community support workers/HCA's, physiotherapists, psychologists, OT students and apprentices and technical instructors and activity co coordinators. This post would suit a passionate OT who is looking to drive positive change and excellent practice in an working age Adult Mental Health setting.

This is a full-time post 37.5 hrs.

Main duties of the job
  • To demonstrate and apply an enhanced understanding of the principles of evidence based Occupational Therapy to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • To prioritise service users' occupational needs following screening, applying professional reasoning to deliver the occupational therapy pathway.
  • To select and use validated assessment tools routinely, informed by the Model of Human Occupation, to identify service users' occupational participation and performance needs.
  • To agree goals with the service user to address identified occupational needs.
  • To plan and implement individual and/or group interventions with the service user to achieve their identified goals.
  • To demonstrate and apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations to the service user's physical and social environment.
  • To assess for, recommend and/or order equipment and adaptations necessary for safe community living.
  • To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment for service users with multiple needs in order to measure progress and outcomes and ensure effectiveness of interventions to support discharge.
  • To be responsible for implementation, evaluation and modification of OT interventions.

Job responsibilities

Management and organisation: To participate in the induction, training and education of students and other staff as appropriate; To participate in the dissemination and sharing of information and skills with staff, students and volunteers; To promote the involvement of service users, relatives and carers and advocacy workers in the evaluation and development of service delivery; To take an active role in the management of resources as relevant to the post; To contribute to the recruitment, retention and development of staff in order to maximise utilisation of skills and knowledge; To assist in the investigation of complaints and clinical incidents within the inpatient service.

Research and Development: To demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current research and apply to practice as appropriate; To broaden research and development skills through participation in local audit and research projects; To participate in service audit and OT evaluation activities as agreed; To undertake research and/or audit projects relevant to OT and/or service, disseminating findings at a local level.

Education / Qualifications
  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Short courses and experience to post graduate diploma level
  • Membership of Royal College of Occupational Therapists
  • Membership of special interest group/community of practice/networks
Experience
  • Substantial post registration experience as an OT including dedicated time spent in mental health.
  • Experience of working as part of an MDT.
  • Documented evidence of CPD.
  • Post registration experience in a range of clinical settings.
  • Experience of supervision.
  • Experience of participating in audit.
Knowledge
  • Specialist knowledge and application of current best practice in OT and mental health.
  • Specialist knowledge and application of the OT process with designated client group.
  • Specialist knowledge of a broad range of interventions required to support individuals with complex mental health needs.
  • Knowledge of a range of community agencies/facilities.
  • Interest in engaging in OT service development and relevant Trust work streams.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to be responsible for a caseload.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships to facilitate successful MDT working.
  • Ability to work autonomously and set own priorities.
  • Ability to demonstrate expertise in assessment using the Model of Human Occupation.

Work Related Circumstances
  • Use of a car or access to a means of mobility to travel across the Trust footprint in line with service needs.
