Job summary

Princess Alexandra Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic Band 5 Occupational Therapist to join the Care of Elderly team at Princess Alexandra Hospital. You will manage a designated caseload, perform assessments, develop treatment plans, and evaluate progress to support recovery and independence.

You will work within a multidisciplinary and multi-agency team, adhering to HCPC standards and College of Occupational Therapy guidance.

Qualifications

• HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist is required.
• Degree or Graduate Diploma in Occupational Therapy is required.
• Broad clinical placement experience including inpatient and community settings is expected.
• Good understanding of NHS developments and IT skills is expected.
• Active CPD participation and commitment to professional development is required.

Responsibilities

• Manage an agreed clinical caseload within the multidisciplinary framework across the acute care pathway.
• Undertake clinical assessments using standard tools and establish goals addressing functional needs.
• Apply evidence-based occupational therapy interventions to address functional difficulties and enable engagement in daily activities.
• Monitor progress and adapt treatment plans; coordinate discharge planning as needed.
• Provide patient and carer guidance and plan home visits to identify environmental barriers and recommend adaptations.
• Plan and organise clinical activities, maintain records, and ensure safe transfers and equipment handling.

You will be responsible for providing occupational therapy services to acute inpatients, managing a designated caseload and undertaking comprehensive patient assessments, treatment planning, and evaluation to support recovery and independence. You will work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary and multi-agency team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care and ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

As an Occupational Therapist, you will be responsible for maintaining professional standards in accordance with the College of Occupational Therapy’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, as well as complying with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) regulations. You will be managing your professional development through active participation in continuing professional development (CPD) activities and supporting the delivery and development of in-service training to enhance knowledge, skills, and best practices within the team.

Responsibilities of this job role

• To manage an agreed clinical caseload within the established multidisciplinary and multi-agency framework, ensuring appropriate coordination of care and effective management of individual patient needs throughout the acute care pathway.
• To undertake clinical assessments using sound clinical reasoning and a range of standardized and non-standardized assessment tools, identifying patient-specific problems and establishing appropriate goals that address functional limitations and immediate rehabilitation needs.
• To select and apply evidence-based therapeutic approaches within the scope of professional practice, incorporating rehabilitative, developmental, and compensatory techniques to address individual functional difficulties and support meaningful engagement in daily activities.
• To implement appropriate occupational therapy interventions and monitor progress against planned outcomes, adapting treatment approaches and discharge arrangements where necessary to promote safe functional performance and maximize patients’ abilities.
• To provide patients and their carers with relevant guidance, education, and practical advice on occupational therapy interventions, while planning and undertaking home or access visits to identify environmental barriers and recommend suitable adaptations for safe living.
• To plan, prioritise, and organise clinical activities, including individual and group interventions, while maintaining accurate treatment records and applying clinical reasoning to inform ongoing care. To facilitate safe patient and equipment transfers using approved moving and handling techniques, maintain therapy equipment and materials, and ensure therapeutic tools are correctly fitted, adjusted, and used safely.
