Job summary

The Supply Register Ltd is seeking an Occupational Health Advisor for a permanent, part-time role at New College Durham. Working 18.5 hours weekly, you will deliver confidential OH services across the organisation, supporting sickness absence management, health surveillance and wellbeing initiatives.

You will provide expert guidance, manage referrals, and collaborate with HR, managers, GPs and external agencies to ensure safe, healthy staff outcomes. Safeguarding checks apply.

Qualifications

  • Occupational Health qualification required.
  • RN status with standing to practice.
  • Proficiency in audiometry and spirometry screening.
  • Strong IT/digital skills and record-keeping ability.
  • Experience in independent standalone OH work is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Undertaking pre-employment health assessments and health surveillance.
  • Manage Occupational Health referrals and provide timely advice.
  • Support staff returning to work and rehabilitation planning.
  • Monitor health following illness or workplace exposure.
  • Maintain confidential records and generate OH reports.
  • Work with HR and managers to promote wellbeing and attendance.

Occupational Health Advisor

Location: New College Durham

Pay: £43,377 - £44,783 per annum, pro rata (Management Spine Point MS00-01) + MRS £6,000 annually, pro rata + £5,000 Recruitment and Retention Payment, pro rata (paid in 2 instalments)

Type: Permanent

Hours: 18.5 hours per week (working pattern to be discussed at interview)

We are seeking a passionate and proactive Occupational Health Advisor to provide a comprehensive and confidential Occupational Health Service, supporting the health, wellbeing and attendance of staff across the organisation. This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact by promoting physical and mental wellbeing while helping colleagues remain healthy, safe and supported in the workplace.

Working closely with managers, HR colleagues and external healthcare professionals, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality occupational health advice, supporting sickness absence management, health surveillance activities and workplace wellbeing initiatives.

About the Role

As an Occupational Health Advisor, you will provide specialist occupational health guidance and case management support, ensuring staff receive professional, confidential and effective support throughout their employment journey.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Undertaking pre-employment health assessments and health surveillance activities to establish fitness for work and identify support requirements.
  • Managing Occupational Health referrals and providing timely advice relating to employee health and wellbeing.
  • Supporting staff returning to work following sickness absence and developing appropriate rehabilitation programmes.
  • Monitoring staff health following illness, injury or exposure to workplace hazards.
  • Providing confidential occupational health advice and signposting to specialist services where appropriate.
  • Working collaboratively with HR, managers, GPs and external agencies to support positive employee outcomes.
  • Supporting and managing the Occupational Health Technician.
  • Carrying out health surveillance activities, including audiometry and spirometry assessments.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of Occupational Health policies, procedures and best practice.
  • Promoting health and wellbeing initiatives, health education programmes and preventative health strategies.
  • Maintaining accurate, confidential records and producing reports relating to Occupational Health activity.
  • Supporting the organisation in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment.
What We're Looking For
Essential
  • Level 2 qualifications in English and Mathematics (or willingness to work towards).
  • Occupational Health qualification.
  • First Level Registered Nurse status.
  • Experience of working independently in a stand-alone Occupational Health role.
  • Experience of managing complex Occupational Health casework.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and confidential records.
  • Strong IT and digital skills.
  • Competence in undertaking audiometry assessments.
  • Competence in undertaking spirometry assessments.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work flexibly and perform effectively under pressure.
  • Professional integrity and a commitment to delivering a high-quality Occupational Health service.
  • Suitable to work with young people and other vulnerable groups.
Desirable
  • First Aid at Work qualification.
  • Experience of working within an Occupational Health role in a non-hospital environment.
  • Knowledge of current health and safety legislation.
  • Experience of using Cority Occupational Health Software.
  • Experience of managing staff within an Occupational Health setting.
