Senior EC&I Engineer

Main Purpose of Job:

Define and distribute the scope of work to ensure all tasks are executed safely, on time, and with appropriate quality. Deliver all design and engineering work to meet the requirements of Design Reviews and HAZOPs within project procedures. Supervise less experienced engineers, manage engineering resources, and conduct interviews.

Position in Organisation:

  • Report to Principal Engineers, with ultimate line management responsibilities held by the Chief Engineer within your discipline.
  • Report to Principal Engineer, Team Leader, or Department Manager.
  • Supervise a design or project team of up to 5 engineers, potentially supplemented by staff from other areas.
  • Allocate work and manage quality, progress, and costs within the project.
  • Manage project subcontracts.
  • Interact regularly with clients and other engineering disciplines' managers.
  • Ensure effective communication within the project team regarding your assigned tasks.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Design, specification, procurement, supply/manufacture liaison, installation, acceptance testing, commissioning, and operator training in nuclear engineering projects.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide technical consultancy.
  • Manage projects, including quality, progress, and cost control, along with documentation.
  • Support sales and customer relations.
  • Manage contractors and subcontractors, and staff development.
  • Promote safety by developing and reinforcing safety culture, ensuring compliance with safety regulations (e.g., CDM, CE marking), and applying safety systems.

Experience and Attributes Required:

Essential for an EC&I Engineer:

  • Degree in a relevant technical or engineering discipline or demonstrable experience.
  • Full UK driver’s license.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status (if applicable).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the nuclear industry.
  • Proven competence in design/delivery within a project environment.
  • Understanding of design requirements supporting nuclear safety cases.

Significant experience in two or more of the following EC&I areas:

  • Mechanical Handling (including remote in-cell handling)
  • Process Instrumentation
  • Functional Safety (BS EN 61508/BS EN 61511)
  • Machinery Safety (BS EN 60204, BS EN 13849)
  • LV Distribution Systems (experience with Trimble Pro-design)
  • Experience managing sub-contracts.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations including CDM.
  • Ability to review design documentation, drawings, and calculations.
  • Leadership skills in a professional project delivery environment.
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Quality and service-oriented attitude.
  • High commercial awareness.
  • Experience leading design teams.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Chartered Engineer or nearing chartership; membership in relevant institutions (e.g., IET).
  • Experience integrating EC&I design with control systems (PLC/SCADA).
  • Experience with design substantiation supporting safety cases.
  • Additional experience in the defense sector.
  • Experience in bid preparation.
