Summary: Performs specific patient care procedures (such as phlebotomy, wound care, gastric and urethral tube insertion and bedside testing) under the direction of a licensed Nurse and/or performs specific support-procedures for the operation of a Nursing or Clinical Department. Operates patient monitoring systems.

Qualifications
Other information: High school or equivalent plus specialized, short-term training in medical/surgical patient care or the delivery of special care. One to three years experience preferred. Receives on-the-job training and competency verification to perform primary functions. Completion of a PHS Non-Licensed Assistive Personnel course or similar training required prior to entering classification. Formal medical technician or military training preferred.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
- Monitors patients and collects information for documentation in the patient record.
- Stamps and assembles patient charts.
- Posts laboratory and other test results.
- Transports patients and documents action on patient record.
- Collects and records vital signs, weights, and other patient data in patient record.
- Administers oxygen under the direction of a licensed Nurse.
- Assists nurses and physicians with sterile procedures.
- Documents all care provided in the appropriate place in the patient record.
- Removes peripheral, intravenous therapy lines.
- Performs phlebotomy.
- Performs wound care and dressing changes.
- Prepares patients for surgery.
- Inserts and removes gastric and urethral tubes.
- Performs enemas and disimpactions.
- Performs bedside testing such as oximetry, ECG, Glucometery, urinalysis and other tests.
- Assists with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, and walking patients.
- Operates patient monitoring systems specific to unit needs (such as cardiac and fetal heart monitoring).
- Participates in the nutritional well-being of the patient through tray delivery and assistance with patient set-up.
- Uses the computerized Patient Care Information System (PACIS) at the skill level commensurate with the responsibilities included in this description.
- Ensures cleanliness of nutrition areas and general unit.
- Cleans and stores equipment.
- Empties trash, linen bags, and sharps containers.
- Stocks medical supplies, linens, and paper goods.
- Inventories equipment as required.
- Processes broken equipment as directed.
- Maintains equipment logs as required.
- Delivers specimens to Laboratory, Microbiology, and Pathology.
- Transports x-rays, blood, and equipment.
- Delivers patient food trays and nourishment.
- Performs basic clerical duties such as answering phones, taking messages, filing, and copying.
- Assists or provides patient hygiene to include shaving, mouth care, foot care, pericare, and bathing.
- Assists patients with portable or wall oxygen, and assures proper storage of E cylinders.
- Organizes care in a manner that contributes to the overall quality of the team.
- Communicates information pertinent to the end of shift summation before leaving the unit.
- Performs other functions as required.
