Nursing Associate – Physical Health in Inpatient Mental Health

Leading on physical health care within the ward area in conjunction with the Physical Health Lead. Identifying and escalating any physical health concerns to the ward Multi-Disciplinary Team. Facilitating physical health clinics within the ward area. Undertaking physical health screening for new patients, identifying any areas of concern and escalating these. Producing physical health care plans in response to any additional physical health needs. Assisting with ongoing care of physical health needs such as wound dressings or diabetic reviews after initial assessment. Undertaking further training to become competent in physical health skills, such as phlebotomy, ECG taking, diabetes management. Assisting with physical health audits within the ward area. Assisting with stocking and maintenance of physical health equipment e.g. wound dressings and resuscitation equipment. Within training, advising colleagues on basic physical health intervention and identifying when escalation is needed. Assisting with inpatient and onward community physical health referrals. Assisting with training and physical health-based competencies on the wards. Knowledge, awareness and understanding of Mental Health Law, including. legislation of relevance to inpatient mental health settings i.e. Mental Health Act 1983 (amended in 2007), Mental Capacity Act (2005) and Community Treatment Orders (CTO). Understanding and working within the boundaries of the Lone Working Policy and awareness of Personal Safety in inpatient mental health setting, including clear and updated communication with the shift lead.
