Job summary

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is hiring a compassionate Nursing Assistant for Outpatients. The role supports the nursing team to deliver high‑quality patient care, assisting with personal care, mobility, and patient orientation in a busy outpatient setting.

The position is part‑time (15 hours/week) with shifts across weekdays; cross‑site working may occur. DBS checks apply and a Development Programme is available to grow within the NHS AfC framework.

Qualifications

  • Hold NHS AfC Band 2/3 pathway awareness.
  • Experience supporting outpatients and flexible 5‑day week patterns.

Job overview

We’re looking for a compassionate and caring Nursing Assistant with a passion to be a key part of the patient care journey here at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). You’ll communicate in a sensitive and compassionate manner with patients, relatives, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team, working flexibly over 5 days a week .

This vacancy is for 15 hours per week, with shift patterns to be determined during the interview process.

The position is primarily based at Wythenshawe Outpatients, though cross-site working across Withington OPD may be an option if required.

Main duties of the job

Being supervised by Registered Nurses & within Trust guidelines & protocols, you’ll assist the Nursing team in delivering the excellent standard of patient care that you would expect for yourself and your loved ones.

Your duties will involve supporting patients with personal care needs, including mobilising, toileting, welcoming and orientating patients and visitors to the department, chaperoning the patient as required ensuring appropriate support, and preparing and maintaining the work environment for clinical procedures.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

As part of your commitment to safeguarding patients and staff, many roles at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This is a standard process across the NHS and helps us ensure a safe environment for everyone.

What is a DBS Check?

A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:

Standard DBS : Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.

Enhanced DBS : Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.

Enhanced with Barred Lists: Includes all of the above, plus checks against the children’s and/or adults’ barred lists.

Who Needs a DBS Check

Most roles involving direct patient contact, working with children or vulnerable adults, or access to sensitive information will require a DBS check. The job advert and recruitment team will let you know if this applies to your role.

The Costs for a DBS

At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.

Candidates are also expected to register with the DBS Update Service which must be completed within 30 days of the certificate being issued. This helps streamline future employment checks and supports safer recruitment practices. For more information, please visit the DBS Update Service.

Qualifications
  • Holds National Care Certificate or be willing to undertake and complete within 12 weeks of starting.
  • Level 2 Apprenticeship in health care OR Gain equivalent knowledge and skill undertaking the Trust Clinical Support Worker Development Programme.
  • On completion of the Trust Clinical Support Worker Development Programme demonstrating evidence of clinical knowledge, skill and competency the worker will move to band 3 AfC.
  • Holds Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English or education equivalent.
