Nursery Nurse

Hours: Full time, Fixed term for 9 month's, 37.5 per week, per week rotating days/nights/weekends. All MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

With our provision expanding to include a dedicated place for Transitional Care, an opportunity has arisen to recruit additional Nursery Nurses to our team. We are looking for experienced, enthusiastic, and committed individuals to join our team. You will work alongside nursing and midwifery colleagues across Special Care and Transitional Care.

Our level 2 Neonatal Unit at Milton Keynes currently cares for approximately 400 infants per year with a variety of neonatal medical problems in Intensive, High Dependency, Special Care and Outreach.

We have exciting plans to develop a brand-new Women and Children's Centre at MKUH.

As part of enhancing Family Integrated Care (FiC) in the Neonatal Unit, we are excited to have the opportunity to welcome new members to our team. We would welcome applications from qualified Nursery Nurses with experience in a hospital setting as well as those who would be new to this environment.

Main duties of the job

FiC is central to the unit ethos and the successful applicant will play a crucial role in facilitating this. Each shift you will be allocated special care patients to be responsible for planning and delivering the care for alongside qualified nurses and midwives. You will play a key role in preparing these babies and families for discharge, including liaising with other teams and specialists within the hospital and community multi-disciplinary team.

We are looking for candidates who can organise their own time and workload whilst also working collaboratively as a team player. You would need to be willing to develop new skills and knowledge and work to a high standard. A flexible and calm approach is necessary as the environment can be demanding and constantly changing.

Excellent communication is essential to every aspect of this role so we would expect the candidate to have effective listening skills and to be self-aware, demonstrating compassion and sensitivity to others.

You will provide a high standard of individualised nursing and family-integrated care for special care babies in line with Evidenced based best practice recommendations and Trust Policies and guidelines. You will promote and support breastfeeding in line with UNICEF Baby Friendly initiative and assist mothers with bottle feeding.

Once trained and assessed as competent use specific equipment to support the care of a baby in the nursery.

Job responsibilities

Provide a high standard of individualised care to mothers and babies in line with evidence based best practice and Trust guidelines and policies.

Using evidence-based practice, assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of family-centred care for a defined group of patients. Under direction of the midwife undertake observations on mothers and babies

Use equipment to support the care of transitional care babies (for example: Blood glucose monitoring, warmer cots, NG tubes and tube feeding, saturations monitors, phototherapy units).

Undertake NG Tube feeding as and when clinically indicated and directed by the midwifery and paediatric teams
