Job description

Megalo Recruit are helping to recruit a Nursery Cook to work at this small setting in the North West London postcode area.

Salary is dependent upon experience, knowledge, qualifications, but negotiable - up to £32,000 pa.

Hours are: 8am-5pm. You work alone in this small kitchen, cooking for about 80 children and staff but you will have a Kitchen Assistant to help.

Job Purpose

The role of the Nursery Cook is to provide nutritionally balanced, freshly prepared meals for the children and to be totally responsible for the safe and hygienic management of the nursery kitchen.

To be based at the setting in which you are employed, with the flexibility subject to operational needs to cover in special circumstances, at other nursery settings within the group.

Main Responsibilities include:

  1. To take responsibility for personal compliance and align with Company Health and Safety Policies, ensuring safe working practices are maintained which minimise the risk to self, work colleagues, parents and children.
  2. To prepare and present a freshly cooked lunchtime meal including a dessert for the nursery staff to serve to the children. The Nursery Cook must also provide suitable alternatives to accommodate for children with allergies, particular dietary requests and those who observe religious beliefs.
  3. To adhere to the ‘Safer food better business’ standards and record keeping.
  4. To prepare and store a light tea for the nursery staff to serve in the afternoon to the children, again following specific requests made by parents.
  5. To work with the Nursery Manager to plan a well balanced, healthy and fresh menu.
  6. To complete food orders within the allocated budget and the appropriate timescales for deliveries.
  7. Reporting equipment, maintenance problems to the Nursery Manager.
  8. To adhere strictly to Food Hygiene Regulations and other safety procedures at all times.
  9. On a weekly basis the Nursery Cook should wipe down and polish all kitchen machines (e.g. kettles, tumble dryers etc.)
  10. On an ongoing basis the Nursery Cook should wash out and thoroughly clean all fridges, freezers and cookers.
  11. Liaise with the Nursery Manager to determine the season’s menu.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE (Essential)
  1. To be able to demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team.
  2. Good oral and written communication skills.
  3. Able to follow written instructions.
  4. Experience of using all appliances and tools necessary in the preparation and delivery of food.
  5. Experience of planning, recording, monitoring and evaluating e.g. food budgets.
  6. Experience of catering for a variety of numbered placements.
  7. Food Hygiene Certificate.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE (Desirable)
  1. Experience of working in a nursery setting.
  2. Recent First Aid qualification.
  3. Ability to communicate well with young children and adults.
  4. Demonstrates creative ability.
  5. DBS check on the update service.
